Mightymariner
After a few weeks of not many pigeons and poor outings, I had the unexpected bonus of a short outing yesterday afternoon when my beloved returned from home work. I had a local spot in mind, a nice copse surrounding a pond which I thought would be just right given the strong northerly winds. The fields were peas, about 4 inches high. As JDog knows, these fields are very close to a town and as a result are shot frequently by approved (and some non-approved shooters), however, I needed something close by so this was it. I set up at the base of the trees, and was nicely cosseted against the wind. Six decoys to my left and we were away. Two pigeons straight in.....and missed. Thereafter I shot averagely to poorly on birds which came from my left and straight out front. There were ones and twos, but also some largish groups of 20-30. I hate these large groups, mainly because I struggle to pick a bird - this happened a few times until I decided to take at least one bird head on, before they swung across the wind. This worked, to an extent. I performed better on singles and doubles, and did pull off three or four left and rights. I didn't get started till 3.30pm but I probably had the best part of the day. I could see birds coming from a long way off, battling the wind and pitching in. This compounded my poor shooting as I had too much time, I always shoot better when 'taken by surprise'. The shooting continued till 7.30pm, and I picked 24 pigeons, lost a couple behind me in the pond. Have to say I was very happy, my biggest bag of the year so far. Hopefully some more to come on these peas, and other pea fields. Picture above is in the back of truck. One of the other shooters who was around came to me later on, they had nine on another field, I think they were a bit disappointed but the other field has been shot several times in the last two weeks so I am not surprised. That said, they plan to go there tomorrow afternoon!
pigeon controller
Cracking short session, well done. I bet you enjoyed that?
Stonepark
Well done. If no dig, i Carry a fishing line and weight to throw over bodies to retrieve birds in pond, as dead birds in pond lift bacterial levels and quickly turn a useful resource to a septic stank. Mightymariner
Cracking short session, well done. I bet you enjoyed that? Yes I really did. It was unexpected and I didn't hold out much hope given the number of people who have been shooting the fields, but the decisive factor, in my opinion, was the wind, which really moved the birds about and disguised my shots. JDog
Great stuff. Reward for your perseverance. I presume one of the other shooters has recently returned from Spain? If the others are intent on shooting there again you may be lucky on the other peas nearer the coast. I hope so.
