Gonna Shoot a Wabbit
Ey up pigeonwatchers, I wonder does anyone know how accurate the land measurer is on google maps? (Google earth function, right click, start measurement) has anyone ever compared it to their laser rangefinder? Rgds GSAW
1066
As far as I can tell it's very accurate. There's a running track at a local sports college, you can see the 100m marks and shows 99.87m. When I first bought a range finder I took it to Bisley on a day when I was shooting off the 100 yard benches. I was really disappointed when it showed 109 yards. I tried Google and that shows the same. Turns out that's just what it is.
1066
Perhaps they are 100 metres? The "100 yd" and 200 yard ranges on Short Siberia have been there many years and although the 100 is about 100 metres the 200 is yards. Some international competitions are shot "metric" like 300 metre, 3 position and 10M air pistol but 100 yard benchrest is internationally recognised. The British Benchrest Club regularly shoot on that range, and, as far as I'm aware the group sizes are not "corrected" for the extra 10% distance. All very odd. I would think sprinters would be a bit miffed if they found their running track was 10% longer than others when performance is judged on times, not head to head. Walker570
It's near enough the target will not notice the difference. I find it very useful when setting up on new ground. You can check your distances to different features. I have two range finders either side of my nose and if they tell me it's too far I don't shoot ;-)
Dannyboy220
How do you do this? I've had a look on google earth but can't see this feature. Sounds fantastic. Does it have to be on a Windows device
JBS
How do you do this? I've had a look on google earth but can't see this feature. Sounds fantastic. Does it have to be on a Windows device Download a free app called "measure my land" brilliant for checking before you set off or in the field. Used it many times to check distances from roads before setting up decoys, have had quite a few surprises too!
Gonna Shoot a Wabbit
Google maps, find the area you are interested in and select the earth function so hedgerows and field margins are shown rather the O/S display. right click on the point you want to start measuring from and select measure distance and then left click on the on the area you want to measure to. Seems very accurate!
robbiep
On google earth, along the top bar there is a symbol that looks like a little tower block (next to the 'email' symbol. Click on this. Now select your measurement type (feet, meters, miles, etc) then click on a point, then another point to get the distance between them. I've always found it to be very accurate. Was using it the other week to check distance to a house from some newly-drilled maize I was shooting over.
Dannyboy220
Found it. Going to be very useful and does seem accurate to what I thought I was shooting.
