Hi Hendrx

I use a WMR constantly for rabbits and foxes out to a hundred, anything past that it drops off pretty rapid, I really like the accuracy at that range 5 shots will or should be grouping sub an inch at 100 yds, my weihrauch 60j does just that all day long

I've got QD mounts on mine and regularly from day sight to NV. ( photon 6.2 X 50)

Ammunition wise, all hornady 30 Grn BT for foxs out a hundred and 25 Grn NTX ( non toxic for the zoo) for rabbits out to the same distance

The two rounds zero exactly the same funny enough at a 100 yds, I mainly shoot off of sticks or a rest in my truck and I find the WMR perfect for the short range of a 100 yds going out at over 2k. psi for a rimmy that's pretty quick

I had a 17 hmr, fine for rangy rabbits but a 17 grns for a fox is not enough at the other end for a clean kill, and that's what really matters the WMR providing you stick with a 100 as your limit it won't let you down its a cracking calibre

I did try it for a Canada goose cull but for some reason found it a bit shy of absolutely dropping them on the spot so I changed to my .222 NTX SP for that

Good luck

since when do FEO tell people how far they can shoot?

I zero my WMR at bang on 100yds

wouldnt hesitate shooting it out to 150-170 (5-7" drop)

You are right drop is not your enemy

energy is

but its still got more energy than an HMR

I use 33gr Remington Accutip

Sorry I should have specified, he 'Advised' that I shouldn't take fox's with it at more than 150 yards which I understand. He also suggested I use it for 6 months and apply for a small cf. Cheers for that, helps a lot! 👍

went out today with my wmr to work out drops with 30gr vmax it is very close to hmr to 100 but at 150 i had about 5" drop but still grouping good enough for me, i got it for a close fox gun and would be confident to 100 with it and 150 max when condition's are right not saying it won't shoot further but not me,

i found the 33gr remington's dropped off a little more than the hornaday but were more accurate

That'll do me! Its only for a short while, a few fox's I see are 50 yards or so but others are 150+ so I feel the wmr wont be enough gun. Providing I keep the feo happy and explain my reasoning's Il get a small cf. 17 remmington, 204 ruger or a .22 hornet. I am looking into reloading but that will come nearer the time :) thanks for the reply's chaps

Cheers patrol, reason I ask is I have a slot for a wmr conditioned for fox. Feo seems to think up to 150 yards should be max. I've shot my hmr accurately to 270 yards. Would 200 yard rabbit shots be ok with the wmr? It should carry more energy than the hmr but I know it drops off a lot quicker!

My 17g Hornady V-Max HMR flies very similar to my 30g Hornady V-Max WMR out to about 100. My WMR is zeroed at 100 yards, simply because that suits my needs!

There is plenty of ballistic information/tables out there, most manufacturers websites carry it, you will find energy and drop details.

I don't see the HMR as a 270 yard rabbit gun and I don't see the WMR as a 200 yard rabbit gun either.

Out of interest why do you need to take rabbits 200 yards? I shoot on a decent size sports ground, it has 6 full size football pitches and 3 or 4, 5 a side pitches, it is well manicured, flat as a pancake and totally exposed, the rabbits are well twitchy, I can still get them well inside 200 yards!

Laziness!! One point I shoot at the furthest shot is approx 200-210. I have a 180degree field of view and there are 4 maybe 5 'hot spots' in this one area. 9 out of 10 I can usually get in air rifle range but the hmr takes out the hard work  Providing I can get it to 150 yards Il be happy, Il let you know at the weekend ;)

I have one which is zeroed at 100 yds which seems ideal for the WMR. The bullet drops off off significantly once out past 140 yds as does energy (as with the HMR) so it is not an ideal longer range rifle for fox. There is more than enough retained energy for rabbit at 200 yds but you'll need to account for 17 inches of drop and also the effects of wind. Accuracy is also an issue out past 140 yds as the bullet drops through the trans sonic range so group sizes can open up a lot. If you need to shoot beyond this, then you're better using a small CF instead of a rimfire, especially for fox.
