steve_b_wales
My wife's car was damaged a few days ago, which could result in it being written off. It's being picked up to be assessed, via her insurance company. If it's found that it has to be written off, how does she secure the private number plates on it? Send off the V5 with a retention form, can't imagine it would be any different to if it had not been written off. The DVLA must surely have a period to allow for this. felly100
If your vehicle is written off, i.e., deemed to be beyond economic repair, then following the settlement of a claim, the rights to the vehicle and therefore the registration mark assigned to it will belong to the insurance company. In turn, the insurance company can sell the vehicle on to a salvage company. Therefore, you must arrange to have your personal registration number transferred to another vehicle or retained on a certificate in sufficient time before the claim is settled. As long as the vehicle is available for inspection and that all the conditions of the government's Transfer and Retention Scheme are met, you can apply to have your personalised registration number transferred to another vehicle or held on a retention certificate. TIP: Make your insurers aware of the fact that your vehicle has been assigned a cherished registration. To protect yourself from losing your registration mark, you must ensure that they are conscious of the fact that if your vehicle is ever written off, it must be made available for inspection by the department of transport. In the event of a write off, it is important to let your insurers know when you have transferred or retained your personal registration number and to send them the updated V5 registration document (this will show the replacement registration mark). Should they wish to sell the vehicle on to a salvage company, it is a legal requirement that vehicle displays its current registration mark. Similarly, if your vehicle is ever scrapped or stolen and not recovered, you will need to take measures to retain or transfer your registration mark. robbiep
The important thing is to inform them that they do NOT have your consent to declare the car a write-off until you have transferred the plate, whether to retention or another vehicle. shoot and be safe
If it gets written off, you will be given an engineers report to that effect. All you then do is fill in a form from the dvla and you will be given a retention document for your cherished registration. All quite simple in reality. Well it was 3 years ago when I was in a similar situation. A quick call to the dvla might not go a miss just to get clarification
shoot and be safe
Don't give your original V5 "log book" to your insurance if it written off, you will need that to accompany your form. A photocopy will be all the insurance company need. Also as said above, if you get the call from the insurance company informing you it is written off, let them know that the number plate is to be retained by yourself. In addition, you should be given the oppertunity to remove any of your own optional extras (upgraded stereo, satellite navigation etc). steve_b_wales
Thanks to you all for the advice. I've passed it on to my wife for her to deal with. We are still waiting for the engineers report.
steve_b_wales
UPDATE. The garage where my wife's car was taken to yesterday have just phoned to say that the her vehicle can be repaired and that her insurance company have agreed to the cost, less her £200 excess. She is pleased with the news. The vehicle (Ford Focus) was bought new by her, nine years ago, and has only done 38000 miles, and is in immaculate condition. She intended to part-ex it later this year for another one, but will probably do this sooner than later now.
wymberley
The local monger has just sold his van transferring the plates to his new car - F13SHY - and his new van is LO58TER. Shame he has to wait some 19 years before he can get it nearly right.
