Del T
Still go to loads of these. So simple and hardly anything to go wrong. Had a few heat exchangers leak and the odd gas valve and thermostat but they are solid. When they started putting pcbs on them and getting rid of a standing pilot light then they went downhill. The pcbs and stats always caused problems early on. And don't mention the condensing Baxi back boiler lol ! I don't charge £30 to service them though , its £75 around here plus the cost of a thermocouple. Edited October 24, 2016 by Del T

Adge Cutler
your right, not the most efficient but unless you use an awful lot of gas you would never recoup the costs of changing it for changing sake in gas savings as the new boiler would need replacing before you got payback. They are a boiler that just go on and on. Crikey those Bermudas are so old they run best on Coal Gas.. I would be surprised if they are 55-65% efficient in other words for every £1.00 of gas you burn 45- 35p is going up the flue. ! Also friendly word of advice...if any one does ever decide to have it removed don't be tempted to do it yourself as many pre 1980 installations used asbestos board insulation in the recess and gaskets. They might go on and on but many of the Housing Associations, Local Authorities we work with are ripping them out of their 70s and 80's housing stock and replacing them.. They do receive a generous rebate though. ! The average 3 bed semi uses about £700 - £750 of gas a year on heating.. a 25 % improvement will save approx. £150 - 175 per year even more if the house benefits form supplementary insulation. Most Boiler manufacturers give a 10 year guarantee so £1750 over 10 years is not unrealistic. Edited October 24, 2016 by Adge Cutler

Only recently are you getting ten year warranties, the normal life of a combi or modern system boiler in ten years would need a fair amount in parts and service costs compared to an older boileer. Most systems would get completely stripped out tanks cylinder the lot and a combi fitted with new rad valves a flush etc all at quite a high cost. Even today most would never see payback. The old adage of if it aint broke dont fix it is apt for the old baxi and ideal mexico boilers.

bruno22rf
Mr Cutler....our combined Gas/electric bill for our ex council 3 bed + log cabin where my daughter lives is £10/month so not really bothered too much, our Heater chap says to keep it going for as long as we can and to buy any spares that come up on the bay, not many boilers still going after 40 years and ours is still looking good for a while yet, worst part to go is around £600 but can be bought used for far less .p.s. we have Solar Panels that reduce our bills by about 80%
