Walker570
Is the barrel the same calibre ? Is it to be held in addition to the one you already have? If the answer to both questions is YES, then yes you would be advised to notify and discuss with your Firearms Licensing Office. All of my individual barrels for my T/C Encore are considered rifles in their own right. If the answer to the second question is NO and the old barrel is being destroyed/retained by a gunsmith then I don't see the need. All my individual barrels are numbered ...is yours? I sold a T/C Encore rifle with a 17 Rem barrel and of course notified the Office as normal. I then purchased a new 17 Rem SSK barrel, same calibre from the USA and it was duly entered on my certificate BUT out of good manners I notified my Office. No problem. An e mail to the Office these days costs nothing and shows the powers that be that you are a responsible, sensible person. I have found in Leicestershire, do/act like that and they will do their best to help within the law and the constraints THEY are put on by the Home Office. keg
I have a Sako Quad and before I bought a second action, each barre was listed separately with serial number.
Savhmr
I think that if re-barrelling, the old barrel on its own (and the new one) are not classed as firearms on their own right so you can re-barrel, like for like calibre without need for a variation providing that your serial number is stamped into your action and not your barrel. If you change the calibre, you need a variation. Old barrel can be destroyed by gunsmith.

My 17HMR Quad barrel is a firearm in its own right and had to be done with a variation.
welshwarrior
Both barrels are chambered so you can only hold 1 on your licence unless you have a variation for a spare. If as I assume is the case you don't have a spare barrel slot. You remove your barrel take it to the rfd and give him the old barrel then you can pay and take home the new one. Through out this you only own 1 22 barrel for that 10/22.
