T20 IR torch

Hi all

I've got an Xtelary T20 for my NV set up that I've recently put together. A bit disappointed with the light I get from it. Although was able to zero my .22 at 50yds using it this evening. But nothing like the 100yds + people go on about with their gear, although I won't be shooting at that distance with the .22, but unless I can increase the range won't be putting it on the HMR.

Are some T20s better than others? Is it worth upgrading to a T67? T67 seems quite heavy to carry around if walking about in the evening, at about half a kilo.

Also, what zoom do people use to get best light yield but also some zoom?

Using a Niko Stirling 4-12 x 50 IR scope. Or I could swap it to a Hawke 4-12 x 50 IR if that would make a big difference.

Thanks for any help.

Rory.

The newer bulbs are 'AS' ones, and much brighter than the originals. I've upgraded all mine for my T20/T38/T50.

The 'IR' you mentioned in your post regarding the scope/s are Illuminated Reticule, so won't be needed with NV. You should get a torch with adjustable parallax to get the best out of your NV.

Sorry if I'm telling you something you already know.

Hi Davyo,

You answered some questions for me in a pm I sent you a few weeks ago and I've now finished the set up. Thanks for your earlier help and your post telling us how to make it.

Got an E700 camera which seems to be the one recommended.

Steve, No, not using the Illuminated reticule, but the scope does have front parallax adjustment. Do you have an ebay link for the new AS bulb and are they interchangeable with any T20?

Thanks guys.

Rory

Did you remove the ir filter from the e700 camera when you made your nv Edited by Luckyshot

They usually come without the IR filter for that reason. To the OP, what scope are you using? And what mag are you using it on? I've found if it's high mag you need more light. My build which is probably the same as yours will go Atleast 200 years and visibly identify quarry and eye shine to about 250-300

The cameras come both ways, even without any ir take the nv off the rear of the scope and you should be able to see 50yards.

Hi

I bought the E700 with the IR filter removed.

I followed Davyo's guide from his old post on 28/12/14 with just a couple of adjustments.

I was using the scope Niko Stirling, as mentioned above, on mag 7.

I'm out on the rabbits on Wednesday so will see how it works then. I will also buy a new torch just in case my slightly cheaper one was not as good as the newer ones. I presumed an IR torch was an IR torch, but no doubt some are better than others.

Hendrix, your distances mentioned are what I was hoping for, but as yet not achieving.

Thanks all.

Just a bit of advice, I used my 22mag with a nikko stirling Mount master 4-12x50 instead of my mtc genesis 5-20 and could see clearly to 300 yards, dropped to about 200 on full mag due to lack of light. I could see further with the nikko than the mtc. Get the 'AS' ir from ludicrous Lumens, can't go wrong.

+1. My Nikko Sterling Mountmaster which cost less than £50, works better with NV than my more expensive MTC Genesis.

Went out this evening with the home made kit. Very disappointed. Only able to see out to about 30-40yds. I have to think it is the torch as I've used the same kit as everyone else seems to have done. Have now ordered an EVO 50. Thought the 67 would be too big to fit easily on the scope due to other rings etc. If I can get to see rabbits out to 100yds I'll be happy.

Thanks Steve for the help.

Have you set the eye relief for camera? Is the picture quality clear? Or blurry?

Ant, got it off Ebay and as usual pay the price for going cheap. Have now ordered an Evo 50

Hendrix I have set eye relief as well as I can. The mil dots are not crystal clear but ok. No doubt with a lot more buggeration (camera out of tube, loosen screw, tweak, put back in etc etc) I could get it better but generally the picture is reasonably good. Tweaking front parallax helps obviously.

Peek, I'll wait and see what the new torch can do. Hopefully it'll be ok to crank up the mag abit.

What do people do to reduce the brightness of the screen? The screen is on its lowest brightness setting but still quite bright in the dark. I was using flip up sunnies last night. Probably looked a right wally but it made a big difference. I thought about gluing some blue or green coloured film / acetate over the screen to reduce brightness. Any other suggestions?

Thanks guys.

On my NV spotter, I've fitted a piece of blue gel filter. It reduces the light down quite a bit.

I use a 3 mode t67 from ludicrous lumens on my build and although most of my fields are small I have spotted my neighbours electric fencer across the valley at 300 yards and can say I can spot rabbits and foxes out past 200 yards, torch weight isn't too heavy, seems a great torch and is very handy to be able to use on the diferent powers as also use with a red pil.

Let us know how you get on.

As I mentioned, nothing wrong with the 'T' series from Ludicrous Lumens. The only thing I didn't like was the slackness on the head of my T50. A common fault according to Andy. Power wise, the 'AS' type pills are far better than the old standard ones. I now use my T50 with a red pill, and my T38 IR is used with my spotter.
