JDog
The bean stubble which Aga man and I shot two weeks ago has been drilled today with wheat. Whether that would be a late winter variety or early spring variety I couldn't possibly say. The seed bed was poor, the drilling was done at a fair rate of knots and there is a lot of spillage. This is the perfect recipe for getting all excited and then being disappointed by the lack of pigeon activity on the field.
fortune
I wonder what sort it is because I would have thought that it was either too wet or too cold for it to germinate.and the seed would rot .but there you go. They must have their reasons for putting it in. It could be something to do with the black grass weed. I think that they put oats or something it and then it is ploughed in before the spring crop. aga man
Could well be something to do with the fight against Blackgrass as pointed out by fortune, which a lot of farmers had problems with last year. Many farmers i am speaking to are planning to sow more spring crops to try and combat it which hopefully will include various variaties of peas and Spring rape One of my farmers drilled some wheat in January here a couple of years back as he thought it was mild with high soil temps etc. It snowed the next day and hard frosts followed so the crop never grew and he wasted his seed! It will be interesting to see if the pigeons find the seed. I bet the local Pheasants and Partridges soon will!
ShropshireSam
Any wheat drilled now will still be a winter variety. Most winter varieties can be drilled as late as february. I should think most growers not growing winter wheat due to black grass will be growing a spring cereal so unlikely you will see much more spring rape or peas Aga Man. fortune
Does this mean that the stubbles will be left alone instead of being disced the day after the crop has been cut? If so bring it on. Horrah for black grass.
