hodge911
hi apologies if this has been done before [ probs 100s x ] mainly for the escort users amongst us what are you getting the best results from choke wise ... I,m using 1/2 choke 32g 6s my results are hit n miss [no pun intended]which I put down to me but a mate of mine got talking to his mate blah blah ect about chokes and spread patterns something I have just let wash over with a shrug of the shoulder. any way it set me off thinking would it be worth changing the one in my escort for one with a bit wider pattern all input welcome good or bad but try and keep on track please peeps thanks
wymberley
This reply has also been given 100s of times. You won't have a clue what to do until you've patterned (properly) what you've already got.
motty
What do you mean by best results?
Guest stevo
As said you really need to pattern your chokes to give you an idea as to what is happening down range. A fair few people make the assumption that there chokes are what the are if that makes sense. For instance just because your skeet choke has skeet written on the side and your full has full written on side this pretty much means nowt. This can be said for the high/ mid range as well as the lower end of the market. The only thing you can really take from the choke markings are that your skeet/cylinder is the most open and your full is the tightest in your choke set. Hense why you could maybe do with a patterning session to see what is what. With my old hatsan I found improved mod (3/4) with rc 2 in 28 gram 7 worked well very in the feild for what I was doing ( smashing crows ). I normally shoot full everything in the feild. But found the one that came with my hatsan was awful. but in your case it may very well be totally different Get yourself on a pattern plate and see. You may well be surprised. Guest stevo
Stevo. What do use as a pattern plate? Do you buy special targets of use big sheets of paper? All depends if I'm at a clay ground and they have some proper pattern boards. I will use them. If I'm up the farm I just use a bit of cardboard ect ect. Either way it doesn't really matter.every now and then we get certain types of bricks delivered. These have sheets of card in them 1m x 1m and there perfect. ChrisPCarter
You haven't said what you are shooting at but I'm guessing pigeons from the gun and cartridge? Choke is all about range so there isn't really an ideal single choke anyway unless you're only shooting at a fixed decoying distance which would exclude you taking longer or shorter shots... I'd work out what's your most common range, pick a couple of chokes that suit and then test them both on a pattern plate with a few different cartridges to see which give the best results. Then hope that the birds all stick at that distance lol
Danger-Mouse
Definitely worth patterning with the shells you intend to use. I tested mine out last year and was surprised to find that at 25 and 35 yards the 1/4 choke gave a much better pattern than 1/2 choke did at the same distances.
