Firing slugs

I've been trying to find out if the Beretta Optima bore is suitable for slugs for a couple of weeks now, and nobody seemed to know. I just phoned GMK to ask their opinion on the subject (I wasn't sure the over bored barrel would be suitable) and it turns out that as long as you use cylinder choke any slug is fine through my Xtrema. Time to get a red dot scope and go beat up some target plates I think ;)

I'm going to be using FAC slugs at the gun club. I can buy them to use there as long as they don't leave the site. Where I go you can book out whatever you want to shoot from the armoury and buy the ammo. Rules are you have to use the ammo on the day and return the gun at the end. As long as nothing leaves the site you can do what you want but if you take ammo home you'd be in it big time if you got caught. Not worth the bother, as I have no use for slugs apart from PSG anyway. They're bloody dangerous without a good backstop. I just want to use my gun to fire them because it's more comfortable than their pump action ;)

what sort of ranges are the accurate at, i would have thought that the unrifled barrel doesn't help. don't they make some sort of rifled chokes in america for americans who shoot slugs?

thanks

yes i think your right. apparently there fairly accurate and in the USA slug guns are becoming more and more popular for deer, alot of the semi auto makers like remi benelli and browning are selling spare rifled barrels as extras for slug guns

There are a lot of states in the US where you can't use rifles on deer because its too dangerous - lots of people firing .308+ across each other . So, in flatter places they have limited deer to slugs. Enough power to kill a deer but a sharp drop-off.

How silly is that?? I mean a 12b slug is going to be FAR more of a ricochet risk.. thats a lot of lead wizzing about at fairly low velocity compared to the .308, it wont break apart like a .308... dangerous as said above, on flat ground with no propper backstop..

Think of skimming a stone accross water :good:

I suppose its the same as the whole debate on .22-vs-.17.

I've had a couple of slugs with grooves cross cut into the lead, presumably to act as the twist in a smooth bore barrell.

yep you can buy rifled 12 bore slugs which self spin, the yanks claim 3 inch groups at 100 yards with a gun with a scope fitted, the ones ive seen have a plaastic sabot with the slug in the front, they claim that some have over a 1,000 foot pounds energy at the muzzle! bit big for bunny bashing.
