side safety catch

Darne use a side mounted catch, and being French, it is forward for 'safe', back for 'fire'! I am pretty sure all Darnes are non automatic.

I believe the Greener system actually 'intercepts' the falling tumbler, not just locking the triggers (which is all the vast majority of shotgun safety catches do). AyA Senior/Premiere bolts the sears, not the triggers, as do a few Purdeys.

Most (but not all) sidelock guns (including English and Spanish) have intercepting safeties, which are not related to the catch, but prevent a discharge in the event the sear is 'jogged' out of the bent. These are not usually found on boxlocks (but there are exceptions in both cases).

There may well be variations but all the Greener side safes I have encountered have only blocked the sears . Not a favorite of stockers when restocking as like the Deeley catch it was fitted up by the stocker when new and adjusted to work ,so when refitting you only have to be little out and you have problems .

I have a recollection of seeing a (patent?) drawing with a side safety using a half round shaped rotating piece located behind the breech face and in front of the tumblers; when the 'missing half' faced the tumblers they could go full travel, but with a 1/4 turn, the tumblers were stopped in their travel by the shaped intercepting piece. My recollection was that I had seen it in a Greener book, but I may have seen it elsewhere (or even imagined it!). I recall the related data and text as pertaining to a boxlock.

I have not seen one as an actual example.

I haven't had my Greener apart since the early eighties, when I dismantled the side safety to reblue its baseplate, which strangely was rusting unlike the rest of the gun.

My memory of the event isn't crystal clear, but I'm pretty certain it wasn't blocking the tumblers.

What's more I can't find my copy of Mr Greener's excellent work.
