inthedark
Fab photo's mate. It's one of the most awesome flyers but I do hate the way they eat what they catch without bothering to kill it first. Horrible things
JRDS
Yep, they are one of the most agile and striking birds of prey, the reason I class them worse than Magpies is they are relentless all year round. A couple of years ago we had some blackbirds nesting in a confer at the bottom of the garden, a female sparrow hawk took the female blackbird off the lawn as she was eating some bread, the male blackbird stopped feeding the chicks which were about to leave the nest, about two days later three young blackbirds were on the lawn calling for food, there was not much I could do as the female sparrow hawk came back and took all three within two days. I've lost count of the number of birds killed in our garden and I make no apologies for disliking this bird intensely, I know some will say its just nature but if that's the case then why kill Magpies? Sorry for going on a bit and high jacking the thread... I have one that comes in my garden on a regular basis and it has wiped out most of the local bird poulation up to the size of a Feral. telf
in that case i stand corrected, never heard of them seeking out nests, always thought they were more birds that take prey whilst flying and swooping on them
Smokersmith
in that case i stand corrected, never heard of them seeking out nests, always thought they were more birds that take prey whilst flying and swooping on them Yep ... 2 years ago we had a nest of doves outside our dining room window ... watched them grow to around a day before fledging, then a Spar came in over 8 hours and took all of them. Saw 3 of the hits .. ruthless. Last week I heard some screaming from next door (calm down) .. looked over the fence and there was a female with it's talons in a fully grown male Blackbird. Like many, I hate to see them clear up so much ... but really admire what proficient hunters they are. I've often thought if re-incarnation existed I wouldn't at all mind coming back as one.
