Wilksy II
Spring rape was sown mid week and the farmer was convinced it would have pigeons on it today as they had been 50/60 on it since Wednesday, well they had gone! But I guessed as much so I took my single shot hushpower as I knew there was a good number of ferals and loads of collard doves around the sheds, id shot 27 doves on a previous visit with an air rifle but I thought I'd have faired better flighting them. No decoys just a pile of sweepings up that attracts everything, mallard, pheasants, jackdaws and a pair of grey partridge! Not to mention ferals and the odd Woody. It was just after 1pm I found a couple of old wagon trailers to stand between and waited for the birds, Didn't have to wait long for the first feral to come back and so it went till 6pm had some great sport and thinned a few pests in the process finished up with 18 ferals, 10 collard doves and 4 jackdaws oh and some goose eggs and a bag of ducks necks for the dog! GingerCat
Collard dove breast wrapped in bacon with tobasco sauce or a pepper with cream cheese are great on a bbq or grill.

old'un
As jdog said you need to keep an eye on the field when the rape starts growing, shot some big numbers on spring rape.
aga man
Nice bit of pest control there Mr Wilksy, Back in the day we shot dustbins full of collared doves and manky ferals. Always used air rifle though, too tight to use shotgun shells on them!
Wilksy II
Cheers Aga man I enjoyed it! But it did cross my mind about wasting carts especially subsonic ones! I've not seen that many collard doves since I was a kid, nearly 40 in the bag and I've hardly dinted them.
GingerCat
The wife prefers them to wood pigeon. Google Texas dove poppers for recipe ideas. Highly recommended by us.
