neutron619
Hello Chaps,I'm looking for any corroboratory information anyone can offer regarding the above Lyalvale cartridges.See here for Lyalvale's own product page:http://www.lyalvaleexpress.com/product/supreme-410-2-inch-9-grams-2/It appears that Lyalvale are offering their 2" shell in both #6 and #9 from the information presented here.Does anyone know of a supplier who offers these (which would corroborate what is advertised) or is my scepticism / suspicion that this is probably a typo well-placed?If they are genuinely offering 9g / #9, that seems a lot more sensible than the more common 9g / #6! (Remind me - is that four pellets, or five!?)I saw a genuine 2"-chambered bolt-action .410 a few weeks ago and these shells, if they are indeed available, would probably be the only worthwhile - albeit, still severely limited - shell one could use with such a gun, outside of the Fiocchi 2" shells loaded with equally-small shot, which I have never seen available for sale in this country.I've emailed Lyalvale too, but as yet, no response.Any / all responses much appreciated. wymberley
As it's a "continental" shot size, It'll be 3 pellets
neutron619
As it's a "continental" shot size, It'll be 3 pellets Damn, forgot about that. 3 pellets then. Meanwhile - Lyalvale have beaten you all to it! I just had a reply from their marketing man to say that they do indeed manufacture the 2" cartridge with #9 shot. This seems to be a nod in the right direction. What use 9g of #6 has ever been is beyond me, but #9 - that makes a lot more sense. I've emailed back to find out where I can get hold of some. neutron619
Well done neutron, I'd be interested in some#9's myself. If I get any response as to RFDs they're supplying with the aforementioned cartridge, I'll post again. My trouble is I'd really like to get a box or two to examine and pattern test, but I'm not sure anyone would order any in less-than-a-slab quantities. 250 is a lot to get through if you're not restricted by your gun to only a 50mm cartridge... Then again, I could probably flog the rest to someone shooting small bore skeet. Anyone interested, if I can get hold of some?
rovercoupe
I thought this was a myth which is why I am getting into reloading 410s with 9s it just seem right for close clays. I have hit a few incomers with 2" cartridges for a laugh and it seems to give quite convincing breaks if its in the right spot.
TIGHTCHOKE
It should certainly improve your accuracy!
neutron619
I thought this was a myth which is why I am getting into reloading 410s with 9s it just seem right for close clays. I have hit a few incomers with 2" cartridges for a laugh and it seems to give quite convincing breaks if its in the right spot. I don't think I'm saying anything that isn't already public knowledge if I repeat the following from the marketing man: We do indeed offer our .410 2" cartridge in fibre wad in shot sizes 6 and 9. We also offer a 9 shot in our 14 gram 2 1/2" as well. We recently converted these to fibre only and dropped the plastic wad. I've used the 2½" cartridge in the past for breaking clays - and, for what it's worth, the same load in a 28 gauge case. Both seemed perfectly fine, provided you weren't shooting at long crossers, side on. Personally, it seems like a reasonably good move. Assuming Fiocchi UK aren't bringing in heaps of .410 loads with tiny shot in them (and I don't see the evidence that they are) then Lyalvale have got first mover advantage in the ultra-short range ratting / barn shooting / small game market. Ok - it's a small market, but it serves a purpose for some. As far as I'm concerned, the jury's still out on whether plastic or fibre is better in .410. On paper, I'd instinctively say plastic every time but that's not what the data I've been collecting for the last 6 months is telling me. Anyway. 9g of #9 is about 180 pellets I think. Probably ok for skeet; a bit sparse for sporting clay shooting I guess; probably still sufficiently energetic at 25 yards to kill small birds / game - pigeon, rats, partridge maybe? If you had birds decoying extremely (suicidally) well or were shooting around barns? I could see a use for them, which I never could with 9g / #6. Then again, it's the kind of load the .410 was invented for, so that makes sense. A light-choked gun and well-developed sense of restraint would make these usable I think.
