matgriff
Hi Had a two hour professional clay lesson today :-) First time with a lesson. They fitted my gun to me, it's' a winchester 101 XTR, basically they added about 1" or just more to the recoil pad on the stock as I'm a bit of a gangly long arm kind of guy. The pad they added was not a good fit, just a temporary measure to get a better fit, it worked great, gun felt much better. How do I get a proper fitting piece added to the stock ? is it something I can buy off the shelf or do I need to take the stock to a gunsmith and get a 1" piece added ? Thanks Mat

Thanks Mat A lot depends on how good at DIY you are ?? You could take a trip to your local gunshop and ask if they have any suitable spacers to fit (take the stock with you). Alternatively, buy a recoil pad of the desired thickness and either fit it yourself or get a gunsmith to do it for you. You may also need to raise the comb (the bit that your cheek sits on) which can be achieved by a 'stick on' comb raiser. Did the Instructor not give you any guideline measurements ?? matgriff
Hi, thanks for the info.. he said the height is fine, no need for any adjustment, just needed the length on the stock adding. I'm pretty handy with DIY, I'll take a look on the net for a recoil pad. Thanks Mat

matgriff
Hi TDS, yes that looks about what I need... does that fit direct against the woodwork ? My 101 has a couple of removable sections, then a kind of thin plate on the end. We removed a couple of the thin pieces, added a thicker piece and then fitted the thin end piece over the top, in a kind of sandwich :-) Thanks Mat
Wingman
Easy job to fit a grind to fit recoil pad, but only if you have the right tools. I used a table top belt sander to grind a limbsaver one for my Auto-5 and it looks as good as a factory fitted one. Attached it first and scribed round the stock to show how much to remove. Then polished it up with Breakfree CLP which was a tip I read on a US website, worked really well.
TDS
Fits to an original uncut stock., should be 14" ..if you have spacers it may have been cut down ..
Scully
A 101 Lightweight I once owned had a shorter stock than I was used to, and I fitted one of those rubber slip on jobbies to it, but I can understand the wish to fit something permanent if the gun is a keeper. matgriff
yes I've been looking at one of those slip on sleeves, seems like a reasonable short-medium term solution, and for about £10 I'll give it a try... thanks Mat
