McSpredder
Machine Mart staff are not necessarily very knowledgeable on the subject. Some electrodes are a lot easier to use than others. "Fincord M" are not cheap, but many people favour them. Best approach is to go to a specialist welding suppler, tell him what welder you are using and how much experience you have, and take his advice. Lots of good advice on this forum: http://www.mig-welding.co.uk/forum/ Don’t be put off by the title, it is not just MIG, there is also plenty of information about stick welding. Some of the forum members are in the supply trade, notably http://www.weldequip.com/
Big Mat
I used a parweld mask alot, not expensive and a nice mask to wear. Avoid cheap rods, they'll make your welding look bad!
jay404
We don't use fincord m any more . We get bohler rods . Well that's what my pipe coding calls for
rovercoupe
Just gone through 45kg of rods from some mail order place in wales that do the super 6 rods real cheap think its a1 plant sales, not the best rods on the market but if you want them cheap and its not for anthing thats going to blow up then they were good enough for me. Oh and my tractor has not fallen apart with them and used 2.5s on that. If its anything other than flat welds then I used some lincon rods that were great at vertical welds. cuffy
A hand held fixed shade lid will be fine for a bit of stick welding . Thick welding gauntlets are not even a fiver a pair . Rods , we mostly use lincoln omnia 6013 , there's loads of others . Cheap rods are cheap for a reason . Newark autojumble should get you sorted . If you want an auto lid get the best you can afford , with a good guarantee . I've been useing a nice jackson one for the last two year , picked up my old speedglass today , Sat in the corner for 2 years , and still works fine . Just seen the date , guess you'll be sorted now !
