Car insurance for young people - advice needed please...

Recommended Posts

Well I'm feeling very old now as my youngest has now graduated and is back home from uni with a massive student debt and trying to find work.

He is desperate to learn to drive, so we bought him a cheap car earlier in the year and sorned it. Its MOT has some months on it still and I've been looking after the battery etc. and it is now ready to be taxed so that I can give him a few informal lessons on a local industrial estate before he begins lessons proper. I did this with his sister - and she passed first time after only a few weeks of lessons.

Anyway, Prof. Google seems to be full of attractive sounding 'offers' and 'bargains' for insurance for young people, so was just wondering if anyone on here has gone before me and got experience of any particular insurance company that may be better for insuring young drivers. Obviously it's going to be expensive - probably more than we paid for the car - but could anyone recommend a company?? It all seems a bit of a minefield.

Cheers.

My two girls passes roughly 6 months apart and I insured both with Smart Miles. They had a black box fitted, cost around £1600 each fully comprehensive on nearly new cars.

Their renewals came through and both dropped to below £500 each with the same company, but I did opt to keep the black box on the cars.

From an old underwriter (and father of three) take some advice - we regarded young lads as almost uninsurable and we had massive stats - buy the newest car you can as young lads and old cars are off the scale. Don't be tempted by any sort of performance car or anything modified (even minor mods will be frowned upon) it might be boring to have a base model but do not put temptation in his way. Black box stuff is good as his behaviour shows up and if he is sensible this will come through in subsequent renewal premiums. Shop around as you will find a huge range of rates and t's and c's. Good luck.
