We have a problem with grey squirels in the bins at the back of the hotel on the land i shoot . while i was leaving i saw 7 squirels all over the bins so i got the air rifle out the boot . there is only 1 bedroom on the back of the hotel so i thought i would take the chance that no 1 would see . i took a few shots and hit 1 straight in the head but it somehow ran of . on my way home a recieved a call from the manager of the hotel saying there was a woman crying and demanding to be moved rooms as she was watching the squirels eating and someone had shot one . i apoligised then 5 mins later another call that the squirell had decided to die infront of her window and could i come and get rid . so now i have to clear a time for me to shoot there so no 1 will be ofended. but when i looked at the squirel it was a clean kill so i have no idea how it managed to run

I've seen them shot clean in the head with an eley sub or a barra match (bis magnum) from a 36ftlb rifle and they can vary from not a twitch (less likely) to full on histrionics with several jumps, leaps and somersaults before they realise they are dead.

If your shot placement was good and the range reasonable I wouldn't worry about it.

You're very lucky she didn't dial 999 on her mobile and say that there was a maniac on the loose with a gun near the hotel, or by now you would cooling off in the local mortuary, having been drilled through with umpteen slugs from a 7.62mm Heckler & Koch eagerly dispensed by the local Armed Response team.

It's never a good idea to take potshots at anything near buildings where there are likely to be members of the public, and certainly not worth it for a few foraging tree rats, what if a pellet had richoched off the bin and gone through a window..??

I hope you've made it up with the Hotel Manager, I'm sure he wouldn'y take kindly to you frightening away his paying customers.

Cat.

thought i would get a few people the no it alls . I was shooting from over 50 yards from the hotel itself and from any roads i was perfectly legal so the police could of done nothing. The question about the shotgun was me being a begginer and needing advice it seems there are people on here that just jump at the chance to be ******s like the pigeon hides post hardly any advice just digs .

So you are telling us it is o.k. to shoot 50yds away from a hotel with high chance of either A.) Damaging the property e.g. Windows. or even worse B.) indangering the hotels residence with high possibilities of a riccy.

You my friend are very very STUPID....

Heres some food for thought.

BASC say....

Whenever you shoot, make sure you know where the pellet is going to end up before you pull the trigger.

Above all, safety is the most important consideration. Always know where the muzzle of your air rifle is pointing and NEVER point it in an unsafe direction.

A public place is anywhere where the public are allowed to go even though they may have to pay to be there. Roads, streets, footpaths, public parks, play areas and canal towpaths are all examples of public places.

To shoot across a footpath or bridleway may constitute a public nuisance or wilful obstruction. There may also be a liability in negligence if it is known that people are on, or likely to be on, the path.
