17 Remmy Vs 220 Swift

As Mr. Sako said - the strike can be seen due to the minimal recoil even at moderately high scope mags.

Mine very rarely gets any use because someone else does the foxing local to me but is bang on tight groups every time it gets an outing.

They are a bit fiddly to get Varget through the funnel because it quite a bulky powder but it's spot on for me and I would not want to change it.

Got round the Varget problem. I put it in a grinder 1st. Not for too long mind.

Loved my 17 rem when I was shooting loads of foxes it was great but draw back was I did reload in those days so it was hard to get ammo for, swapped it for a 222 and 22-250 that work well for me until I got a 204 and started reloading.

I preferred the 204 less wind effect but the 17 rem is a love round you'll love it with your devotion to load development.

17 rem is no good in the wind, especially at a decent range.

220 swift better option or get a lighter 22-250 (better rifle all together)

Can you expand a bit on your last statement? It is a quite a subjective statement to make.

There is a whole world of interesting .17 and .20 calibre cartridges out there for people with an interest in reloading. Most are capable foxing rounds and all will provide the zest and spice of life - variety!

For foxing at typical UK ranges (not wannabe sniper ranges) I'd say the choice between Swift and .17 Rem comes down to a question what do you fancy rather than whether they will do the job.

One thing about 17r is that it was believed to only ever travel about a thousand yards thus making it not only safe but ideal for many UK areas of high populations.

I also noted that my friend could shoot squirrels up trees easy with it with minimal branch back ground to ruin the bullet. If the squirrel got hit there was no bullet left at all!

Sudden thought - if your mate has a .224 (22-250) already then his mod, bullets and some reloading tools will of course be useable for a .220 Swift. To be honest though the .22-250 and the .220 Swift are ballistically almost identical so why not go for a 1 for 1 and just get a lighter 22-250? Unless of course he fancies a change.

LW I dragged this post out from the history book back in 2007. I bet the chap that started the topic is in the local domino's team now and packed up shooting. Lol

Picked up my action today for my 17 remington, dropped it off to get blued, had a tinker with the stock. Looking good ;-) barrel on next weekend, proofhouse then shoot a few. :-)
