Cranfield
I am looking to purchase, a non FAC silenced air rifle with a telescopic sight. It will be used for shooting magpies and crows, not targets. Not wishing to spend (or waste) loads of money, does anyone have any recommendations. My knowledge of air rifles is limited to past ownership of a BSA Meteor .22 and a .177 Diana Original Mk3. Uptodate, I,m not.

ernyha
Cranfield i wont say what my previous 2 air rifles were as the coincidence is untrue except to say that i would probably still own the Meteor if it hadn't been stolen after a break in i had a few years ago. With the insurance money i bought an under lever BSA Superstar with silencer and scope. Don't know if they are still made but i use it mainly for garden vermin and it readily takes care of magpies, woodies and grey squirrels. I also use it occasionally around the farm yards on ferals. I am quite convinced the airgun boys will be on this thread giving you all the advice about all the superguns they use but for my type of limited use i find my gun to be more than adequate. ernyha
How much/where can I have this done Red, my Theoben gas ram cost about £55 and i fitted it myself. Basically you just remove the spring and replace it with the ram unit.
Cranfield
ernyha, the BSA Superstar has been discontinued. Doing Google searches for the models suggested is quite confusing, as BSA gave the same names to their air rifles, as they gave to their motorbikes. The "quietness", is not essential, my nearest neighbour is half a mile away, but I am surrounded by ewes carrying lambs and therefore, very soon, lambs. They don,t like too much disturbance at this delicate time. I want to spend as little as possible, as I will not be using it very much. The current prices of new weapons has suprised me, I didn,t think I was that out of touch with the airgun scene. I think I will have to buy a "springer", as I don,t want my Wife to get the wrong idea, if I start bringing air bottles into the cottage. I appreciate the advice and suggestions. neil
what sort of money are you thinking to spend? Knowing Cranfield......................Not a lot ! Give Cranfield a break ern, his Diana Original Mk3 would be a collectors piece now, they only made 2. Cranfield had one and Noah had the other one to keep the feral pigeons off the ark

juddy
what about a webley xocet xs fairly cheap and a good powerfull gun im well happy with my one
Cranfield
lurcherboy, thanks for the loan offer, I have had a few of those from other posters as well, much appreciated. But, I hate borrowing things (I also hate lending things), just in case something happens to them. juddy, a quick search shows the Webley Exocet XS selling for around £145 new, I assume thats without the scope, but with a silencer. How did yours come equipped and does the price sound about right ?
juddy
hello m8,the xocet xs comes as standard with a silencer but a scope is extra and you have to have one as theres no open sights a standard xocet without silencer and with open sights fitted is the cheaper option get the xs m8 and put a hawke 3-9x40 scope on it im pretty sure it still works out cheaper than a bsa lightning

Fisherman Mike
Cranfield I have a 2 year Old Gamo CF30 Underlever in very good condition (.22 Calibre) Fitted with a 4 - 9 x 50 SMK scope... It has had very little use and is powerfull, 11.8 ftlb on my Chrono with accupel Being a fixed barrel it is also very accurate.. I have modified it slightly by removing the anti bear trap which stops the underlever slamming back into place if you accidently pull the trigger before it is closed. But it does allow you to uncock the gun if you wish by using the underlever to release the spring pressure. I have only put about 200 pellets through it if that. It is not fitted with a silencer but to be honest it aint that noisy in comparison to older spring guns... The SMK scope was about 45 quid and is chinese made but is of comparable quality to other scopes of twice the price. Gamo are a Spanish Arms company and infact the biggest manufacturer of Airguns in the world... Their products are mass produced but their quality contol is ecellent It sounds like it would be the ideal tool for your occassional shooting. If you are interested I will post a picture on the Forum on Monday ( I am shooting all weekend.... yipeee) I would let it go for 85 quid, 95 if i had to courier it to you. dead-eye-dick
Sound like a good deal, £75.00 inc. pellets....
