Thanks for the advice. It looks like I need something like this (but in 30mm not 1")  both to fit the weaver rail but also the scope because the Hawke Vantage 30 is a fairly short scope for the rifle. Anyone know where I could find that in 30mm?

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Weaver-1-Inch-Steel-Mounts-Savage/dp/B01N4SVLKV/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1528188266&sr=8-3&keywords=savage+110

Wymberley- good point, I fitted the scope on the mounts and got someone to hold it on the rifle at the correct height and it gives a good sight picture and a comfortable height from the eye, but well worth checking.

To the point about safety, whilst I'm a newbie to this particular sight mounting issue I do have 12 years experience first in the British Army and now the RAF firing (almost) this exact round as well as sidearms and foreign automatic and semi automatic weapons. I'd be perfectly happy with some form of testing as a previous poster suggested given that I am subject to  annual weapon handling, safety and marksmanship testing already. That said, I can see that what I have isn't right, hence am seeking advice from those more knowledgeable and would never think of firing without a suitable sighting system or indeed taking any form of dangerous shot. Thank you to all who have offered advice- I do appreciate it and won't be put off asking questions rather than going blundering into something that could be unsafe.

Nice reply that mate, get some sportsmatch picatinny high mount for about 30 quid, get your scope in them loosely, make sure your rifle in unloaded obviously and flat (Use a small bubble level on the rail) and a piece of string with a weight on the end off the ceiling and line the scope up with that horizontally, then boresight at 25 yards or so ( rifle on a rest, bolt out, look down the bore to a target 25 yards away and align the scope with with you can see in the target) then get some shots down range and to get on paper, move to 100 yards and get a good zero and your good to go

Why not take gun and scope to nearest gun shop and ask them t sort it out.

Why would you when you can sort it yourself? If you've spent good money on kit you might aswell learn to use it, if your out in the sticks and something happens and you knock your rifle/scope you've just ended your days shooting. You could have paid good money to shoot so it would be a waste

+1 - this simply takes all the grief, time and expense out of the job and you get to learn how to set things up at the same time.

this is what I did last time I had to fit a new scope to a rifle. My local shop (Philip Websters) was awesome, even on a busy Saturday I was allowed to try each height of rings to get the lowest overall setup, they lent me a torque driver and had a quick check to make sure everything was square for me. OK so the rings might have been a few quid dearer than online but well worth it for the help, advice and the one stop shop service.

OP I’d be careful of all that military shooting experience I have a little of it and saw main soldiers I’d not want hunting near me but the passed an apwt.   Especially as you have Weaver bases which are based on the military picatinny system that it interchanges with

As to not not being able to mount a scope properly there are hundreds if not thousands of FAC holders who can’t some even know of their inability and take it to a riflesmith to do right.
