markm
How much truth is there in the old wives tale about 'you should'nt drink when your taking penicillin' cos it stops it from working etc etc.

pin
"the myth began at what used to be called the VD clinics - what are now known as the sexual health centres. The first true antibiotic was penicillin. It proved remarkably effective in curing some very nasty ailments. The problem was it didn't stop people having a few drinks and having more fun. If they took alcohol while on penicillin, they might get frisky and pass on the disease before the penicillin could clear it up. So it's nothing to do with a real interaction between penicillin and alcohol? Correct, Nothing to do with the pharmacology, no. It was a moral agenda to keep people under control"

Oly
Can't remember if it was penicillin or paracetamol that the doctor told a school friend (years ago) not to have alcohol with (not that he should anyway being that this was at high school) but his Dad gave him just ONE beer...and he died as a result. However I do know others who have done the same and been fine. You need to ask yourself if it's worth it risk
vole
There is one antibiotic that makes you really ill if taken with booze. Not Penicillin though.I have had a look in my book we refer to in work and it says nothing about this theory.but they dont know everything about everything,if you ask me.Still,if you are ill, especially if you need to keep hydrated alot of booze is bad.Penicillin can upset your stomach,as can booze. Both together ,more so.Which on top of the illness requiring penicillin may be bad news. The myth that antibiotics and drink make you more drunk is **** too,as I found thru years of research. If in doubt ask a pharmacist.most serious interactions will be on the label.
pin
One you really need to be careful with is Metronidazole, in fact loads of antibiotics will put you in hospital if you take them and have a big drink up.
Mungler
My understanding was that alcohol with antibiotics just negated the effect of the antibiotics i.e. you drink on them and they don't work. However, I was once prescribed some exotic antibiotics by my doctor who told me that under no circumstances was I to drink on them. He said that they were sometimes prescribed to recovering alcoholics. He went to great lengths to explain this - I didn't put them to the test. Over to you.... vole
Yep,PIN hit the nail on the head.Other name is Flagyl.Makes you so sick it was used to kerb a booze habit. There are few drugs you cant drink moderately on,but if you are ill enough then it is best cut out.In 20 odd years of health work I have rarely heard folk told not even to have a snifter now and then.It is even encouraged. The label would be really clear if it were to be toxic with alcohol.Cheers! Cranfield
Another effect of taking drugs, especially painkillers and drinking alcohol, is that you can (more quickly than usual) become tired and disorientated. There use to be a VD Clinic in Chatham, in the basement and ground floor of a large house and there was an Employment Agency upstairs. Right next to the gate was a bus stop and if I ever went to the Employment Agency I would ask people at the bus stop where it was (pretending I hadn't seen it). My logic was that as I walked down the garden path, they would know where I was going and not speculate.
