njc110381
I just took a trip to my favourite gun shop to look at their stock of rifles. Until now I was thinking I'd like the 16" Varmint model because it looked nice and compact, and also felt quite nice to shoulder. Today they had a 16" American in too, and it really does feel right. The wood is much nicer and is slimmer, and the gun weighs a lot less than the Varmint. I want that one instead now! My only question is how good will it be on the range? I'm making an assumption that unless fired very fast, a HMR isn't going to suffer the same over heating issues that the centre fire rifles do? If that's the case I'll take the lighter gun! You put five .17hmr shots through the barrel and see how warm it gets. G.M.
stevethevanman
go with whichever one you like best, but the overheating on the american is not going to be an issue unless as you say you use it at the range, and even in the field you are never going to fire more than 5 rounds in a row are you. Oly
Have you tried anything other than CZ?? If not get out to other dealers and try others. This would have my vote http://jga.anschuetz-sport.com/index.php5?...duktShow=detail

njc110381
I have played with other rifles, Anschutz, ruger77, Sako quad. I like the CZ for its simple and inexpensive quality. Ok, comparing the Anschutz/CZ bolt movement is like comparing pulling a car up a road with/without wheels on it, but it still shoots well and certainly out shoots me! I don't want to spend a lot on a farm gun. A few weeks back I had two rounds touching with a mod on, then another two touching without the mod, and one flyer (the first shot). That was with a 19" CZhmr at 50 yards. I was more than happy with that so it made my mind up for me. I may club shoot sometimes, probably 50 rounds in 30 mins. Should I get the Varmint then? al4x
to confuse matters more mines a heavy barrelled american, I should know what the difference is but I'm assuming its just the stock thats different. So you'd get the stock you want with the heavy barrel. Mine certainly outshoots me and for what I paid for it I don't feel too bad dragging it out in all conditions and picking up the odd scratch etc

deadeye ive
In my experience with my CZ varmint on the range if I'm firng one after the other the barrel is'nt really warming up until after 20+ shots on a moderate day (20 oC )..........However firing this way ensures I achieve a group like a shotgun at 100 yds even off sandbag supports .............by giving at least 1 minute delay between shots I can achieve a group like this at 100yds ............However this example I can count on one hand only and the .17hmr is'nt has consistant as it's made out to be IMHO but still the best by far small varmint calibre out there at the moment . I think that's just the way CZ build it, and as far as I'm aware you have a Varmint! The stock on the American is very slim and rounded on the end of the fore end, and is chequered on the pistol grip and fore end. The Varmint is heavier wood, only chequered on the pistol grip and is quite sharply angled (it's almost squared off). What's your wood like?
