Dazv
Hi guys I'm after some more advice on reloading 410. Thanks in advance chaps, having everyone's wealth of knowledge on this forum is a godsend to me I really appreciate it! Anyway I've been looking into 410 crimp options I've got a loadall set up for 20gauge so that's fine but they don't off a .410 conversion I'm either looking at a roll crimp to go in a drill press or buying one of those crown crimp starters and making a frame for it to go in and make a sliding punch to finish the crimp? I do a large amount of metal work and welding so rigging up a loadall type press won't be tricky but I'm just after your opinions on what I should do??? also open to other options ideally the cheaper the better. thanks again guys Darren
Donkey
Darren ive been trying to perfect my 410 crimping for a while now i have a Ponsness warren press with a new crimp starter and a modified press for 3” shells i would think if you can can get a pre crimp to work use a OMV or Gaep finisher to sort out crimp or just go for rto you should be ok
lancer425
i coppied this with a threaded bushing off ebay and an drill. works good with pree crimped cases or you can rto with a card disk rto closure if you want. http://castboolits.gunloads.com/showthread.php?199177-Roll-Crimp-for-410-homemade
Dazv
Cheers For the reply. The roll turn over seems to be the cheap option but I don't if it's th best option? When you say roll a pre crimped case? As in start a fold crimp then finish it with a roll crimp? I've possibly got the wrong end of the stick? lancer425
i have no crimp start star head, so i have to fold in the petals on a original crimped case and just complete it with the crimper in the link above its adjustable so you can set the depth accurate. it puts a really tight rolledge and uniform fold on previously fold crimp cases, if you got a crimp starter i think it would do just as good a job on new cases. The GAEP machines and OMV finish fold crimps this way. A tip on making the tool, dont get the main barrel too big, it just wants to be a snug fit not too much slack, the text in the link is good info, i used a threaded bushing/ insert off ebay. and a bolt drills and drill press, i rto on an old manualy cranked bench drill press, must be over a hundred years old, but i have used it in the typical cheap hobby drill presses with same results. . sitsinhedges
I always thought you needed the cross pins to fold the crimp inwards on a rto?
Walker570
I use a GAEP spinner from Folkestone Engineering to finish my star crimps but they also do a roll crimp finisher. I run mine on my bench drill with great success and would think the roll utrnover would do the same. I made a board to mount on the drill pres vice with a hole about 3/16 dep to locate the shells accurately each time. I lightly smear the top of the shell with wd40... just a smear with the finger helps stop the case spinning and by the time it wants to, it will be done. Takes but a few seconds. Dazv
I've never come across starting a fold crimp then finishing it by rolling it. Does anyone have an idea which is better fold or roll?
