ditchman
wellll.................kenzie and a couple of dockers....were out on the wolverton flats....the tide was out moon still up and they were getting or trying to get closer to the pinks at the tide line....this involved crawling up the creeks and over the flats ....very very quietly........... so they were nearly there and they were about 30 yds apart from each other and Kenzie started to howl and cry out....and the boys thought he was in trouble so they rushed over to him.............by this time all the pinks had been spooked and flown......so they got over to him in the bottom of a wet muddy creek ...to find him sobbing his heart out............ anyway ...they dropped into the creek to see what the matter was....and he was sobbing ...."its a deaden ....its a deaden...."..................whats a deaden...? the boys said......."the bloke" kenzie says...and pointed to a body that kenzie had crawled onto in the dark.......so they had a closer look at the body that had been washed into the wolverton flats....... "you ******...idiot..."..........the boys say...."youve ruined the flight.......its a bloody tailors dummy..............." true story that .. the kings lynn dockers were mad keen fowlers...they even had floating sheds on drums nicked from the docks out on the marshes... I knew a few Yarmouth dockers who were also keen on a bit of fowling , they didn't go as far as having floating sheds as the tides wern't as high as they were at Kings Lynn , but they did have the odd house boat scattered around the estuary , in those far off days the timber boats were unloaded by hand and many of the upright timbers that acted as supports to the deck cargo often ended up slipping into the river , these always ended up falling into the river on a flood tide so they drifted up the river to be salvaged later on during the day , if they fell into the river when the tide was ebbing then they would have ended up in the North sea , there was an unwritten law that whoever picked them up first then the timber belonged to them , we were often in the right place at the right time and if we were in our boat shed and a length of 3 x 9 was floating up the river it didn't take us no more than a few minutes to launch our punt , row up to the length of timber , lift one end onto the back of the punt and take it back to the shed , this was stored till we had enough to sell and I tell yer who bought it , your ole mate who ran the clay shoot on the edge of the marshes Nice yarn about Kenzie the goose man

Look what I have found from a bit longer ago ( 1964 + 1965 ) , the first one was when I joined as a junior member and the subs was 10/0d ( 50p ) , then the next year I was classed as a mature member ( there words not mine ) and the subs went up over double , inflation was even showing its ugly head over fifty years ago , then the W A G B I one was by signed by John Anterton who was one , if not the best president we had.
