sandersj89
We have a crafty old fox coming over to near one of out pens, very lamp shy. We know where he is coming from and it is a spot where it is only safe to shoot from a high seat so I am going to bait him for a few nights and they try and introduce him to a swiftly traveling bit of lead when he is not looking. To help I am going to shoot a rabbit or two in the next few evenings and leave these in the spot by the high seat. I will peg them down to try and delay him a little. But I also want to add another element of smell he cant resist. I have cut a length of down pipe about 2 feet long and drilled a number of holes along it's length. The plan is to place something irresistible inside the pipe that gives of a great smell he will be drawn to and then tie this to the fence so it wafts over the area. My initial thoughts are wet cat food, rotting rabbit guts or a smelly fish such as a mackerel. I dont have time to brew the famous NTTF Horse Hoof Bait! Anyone tried anything similar? pin
Loads of posts on the "bait pipe" thing. From what I glean anything out of the ordinary (apart from aftershave) will get raynard interested - inquisitive things they are
henry d
Keep an eye out on your travels as 2 things foxes like the smell of and that is moles and cats. Admittedly a mole isn`t the most common thing to find dead, however tiddles can be found on occaisions Seriously try the cat, it`s a killer. Moles I can get no problem, I trap enough of the damn things in the garden!!!! Funny enough you are the second to suggest a cat, I will keep my eyes peeled and hope I find one that is not too well gone as I drive an estate and the thought of the smell in the car!!!!! Tonight I am going to set up a bait point by the high seat and see if anything starts to take an interest in it over the next few evenings. Fingers crossed. sandersj89
Well the scene is set. Up to the shoot after work with rifle in hand and bagged a couple of rabbits. I also took along my pre made ventilated section of down pipe, some cheap cat food, a fresh mackerel and a some tins of tuna in oil. Mackerel into the pipe and hung from a fence 70 yards from a high seat, tuna and cat foot scattered around and one rabbit tied to the fence with another tucked under the fence. Hopefully this will be a veritable smorgesboard for charlie. I will be checking back each evening to see how things go and if he takes some food. Fingers crossed. new to the flock
failing that a local gamekeeper recommended tethering a chicken, may want to try putting it in a cage though if you want to keep it :-p I am certain that LIVE decoys are not allowed here, I do not however know the law for the UK governing this. Would someone like to clarifie this for me Please. NTTF
Cranfield
There is comment here regarding trapping pest species of mammals and birds http://www.basc.org.uk/content/codesofpractice , but it doesn't specifically mention the point we are seeking to clarify. I am sure there is something in the Wildlife and Countryside Act and I will have a look later, if somebody else doesn't find it first. starlight32
Deer guts is the best bait attractor for foxes from my opinion. That is all I have been taught to use from the year dot, and have alway had good results.
