I have found that using a steel rod tends to split the shank when used, I know that even people like the chap from Crafty County man use this method. I cut a spigot on the shank and drill the head to suit, this is a lot more time consuming but is much stronger. I am in the process of making one with a piece of cow horn and will take some photos before I assemble and post

Many thanks for your reply. I understand that that`s the traditional jointing method, so must be the correct way and stands the test of time.
