harrycatcat1
I changed broadband supplier yesterday and everything seems to be working apart from the mbps. The previous supplier I used to get 35 to 45 mbps. I did a speed test yesterday for the new supplier, it was 4.5 mbps. I rang them up and the chap on the end of the phone said "you will have to wait a week for it to get up to speed and settle down to 40+ mbps" Do you think this is true or is he widdling up my back 🤔
Cranfield
I have heard that it usually takes up to a week, so I would believe him. When I last changed, it was up to expected speed within 2 days. Edited November 2, 2022 by Cranfield
udderlyoffroad
It is, as they say, a thing. DSL technology is very clever at pushing high bandwidth signals down ancient copper phonelines strung across poles. Your router/modem and the hardware at the exchange 'talk to each other' to determine optimum bandwidth according how 'noisy' the line is. For whatever reason this optimisation information isn't passed on when you change suppliers, sometimes with good reason as your supplier may have his own hardware at your local exchange. So yes, you need to wait a week for the speed to settle. Best I can suggest is stream a movie at the highest quality you can, in order to give the hardware some data to work with. old'un
Not long ago we were on copper standard broadband, speed download 6-7mbs and upload 1-2mbs. we upgraded to fibre to the cab and what they called super fast broadband, received new router, plugged it in and within 10 minutes it was hitting 40mb and 12mb, now I dont know if changing provider makes any difference but would not of thought so. harrycatcat1
Thanks for your replies 👍 I thought that it sounded a cock and bull story but I will wait a week and see how it is 😉 Thanks again 👍👍

Minky
Those speeds are crazy. They are like slug speeds. Several years ago we were with BT and had been for a long time. If the wind was going in the right direction if we were lucky we might get 8mb but they wouldn't do us a deal so goodbye. We got a new deal and within 10mins we were getting 77mb down and about 20 up. We cant get fibre but they are advertising way over 100 mb. Not that many peole need anything like that. Minky
No. It is ordinary broadband from Vodafone. The bt connection was only 8mb if the wind was going in the right direction. They wanted the same price as Voda who offered 77mb. No other provider offers speeds like that here. It does delivery the stated speed and I never get buffering etc and downloads in a flash. I think that the package for everything is about 30 a month. The stupid thing is that we'd been a bt customer for years but they wouldn't give any sort of a deal. Their product fell well short so goodbye. Have a nice day. Edited November 10, 2022 by Minky
old'un
So what Vodafone package have you got? Is it FTTC?
Minky
I wouldn't have a clue about the technical situation. As far as I know it's nothing special. All I know is that I get about 77mb download speed which is miles faster that any other offering in this area. As regards speeds today 5here was an advert from Virgin and they are stating 136mb download.
