Almost new on this forum

Hello, my name is Paul and I go by the name of DutchPigeonHunter on this forum. I am 54 married with (two) children. As you might have guessed I am Dutch and live in The Netherlands, Apeldoorn to be more specific. Apeldoorn is some 15 miles from Arnhem, which is better known over where you are. I have been shooting since I was 30 or so. I own two labs, one six year old male and an eighteen year old bitch. Both are yellow and are by Dutch standards excellent breed. In The Netherlands shooting doesn't exist in the way you have driven shooting over there (UK). We are not allowed to rear gamebirds and shooting mainly means going out with six to eight guns with some dogs and beaters and bag three hares and a pigeon. Other then that (and much better) we do pest control most of the time, corvids and geese are our new "gamebirds". And the odd pigeon ofcourse, if you are in the right area and you have wheat or barly in your field you can have some good days on pigeon. Also there are wild boar and deer but management of those is only for a small group of hunters and is becoming insanely expensive. Overall I would say shooting in any form will be non-existant during my lifetime. Does that make it all bad? Not really, I enjoy being out in the field and there will always be corvids and there are lots of geese so there is always an opportunity to go out. But I sure hope you (UK) will be able to withstand the forces that work against shooting and that you realise that giving an inch will mean they (anti's) will take a yard or more (I don't know any English expressions for this).

Thank you! Are you allowed to shoot the boar with night vision/thermal?

Yes. Unfortunately as they spread out from the established areas they are not currently a reliable quarry. Here a few days and then maybe not again for a few weeks. I have tried baiting but the local badgers usuualy get there first.

Hi Boyd, I’m looking in to what I could arrange. Bean geese is a species that I don’t even know if we can shoot those over here. Whitefront we cannot shoot during winter in most areas where there are many. Dutch government considers our country a host to those species during winter and they are protected in winter. They do however not want a population to settle and therefor we can shoot whitefront during summer. For real good geese shooting you’d have to be in Friesland or Groningen which are in the north, I live in the middle however. I would go out a couple of times per season and bag maybe four or five geese while in the north you’d go out three times per week and be pretty sure to bag over twenty. But I don’t have any shooting rights over there.
