Ferretting

I had a call from the farmer in the week about a build up of rabbits on some land that I've been wanting to get on for years it turns out he farms it & he's more than happy for me to get over there & sort them out, he took me for a spin round with the lamp & we shot 7 rabbits while he was showing me around <_<

I''ve been walking the dog over there all week to suss out some of the likelier looking warrens, & clearing the nettles.

The Peltman joined me today for a go at em with the ferts, & we were both starting some of this years new stock. I arrived half an hour earlier than Pelty so netted up a mound of about 8 holes & within 2 minutes the first ferreted bunny of the season was in the bag, unfortunatley that was it for that warren, but it was a good first run for my new hob "Harry the bear".

Pelty arrived & we moved on to another small 5 holer so he could give his new hob a turn, he went straight in, but alas failed to bolt, I entered one of the jills & that had the desired effect, with another one in the bag.

We then moved up the feild to a well used warren along a hedgeline with 80 plus holes, we netted what we could then ran a long net through a break in the hedge & down one side, the more experianced girls were entered & we then had a steady hour of them working the bunnys along the hedge, we had some great bolts to the purse nets & a couple in the longnets as they raced down the hedgeline

We had a great mornings sport & packed up with 9 good sized bunnys, we didn't see any young although on paunching them one was found to be carrying. The only sad sight was 2 that had the dreaded mixxy ???

All in a good start to the season, with the new stock working well & some cracking new permission gained :)

Nice one SS

I am on my 4th outing this Sunday and having had two good frosts it shold be a lot more 'user' friendly as those nettles are doing our heads in <_<

We broke our Sunday record on our first trip out this year :) 40 scutails and only two with mixy.

Last week we had 18 and most were spoiled by the terrier or had mixy ???

Roll on Sunday and a good frost ???

Tell me about it LB, my hands & forearms are still fizzing from the nettles :)

Thats some good bags you got there, how'd you go about it? Longnet/purse/dogs?

SS

We have 3 x 100 yard quicklay longnets but still purse where we can, nettles permitting, a terrier to mark that would be improved greatly with a lead slug to the head <_< and there is always at least 15 frets to enter.

We could get proper bags if we went out before the intended day and prepped the buries but the reality is we have too much permission and all of us have jobs. Plus we make way too much noise to expect any scuts to bolt

I am taking one of my lurchers this sunday so that should be interesting. He has only been used on a seek and destroy basis so what ever can go wrong probably will but it beats being indoors with the rottie ???
