I have many Winchokes but have never owned the spanner, and have always tightened and loosened them by hand. Do they need to be so tight?

No they don't need to be so tight, the little C spanner is to get them out rather than put them in.

Sold my last one about 2 years ago, very hard to find nowadays.

It was for undoing them.

I tighten them by hand and it was very tight.

I do grease the threads so it wasn't stuck just tight.

But they have an external knurl, which is why I asked. Mine are only ever finger tight.

Could always make yourself one out of a bit of steel or ally. Do some CAD - that’s Cardboard Aided Design - transfer the template to steel and get busy with the bench grinder & dremel.

Won’t be brilliant but you only need it to work once, after all.
