Minky
I suppose its what is construed as a threat. To get a reaction. I've had pigeons land on the field between me and the pattern and just start feeding as they naturally would.... then suddenly realise that something is wrong and fly off.. for me to mis .!! I've known a couple of thousand pigeon to rise as one as soon as I came round the corner of a wood 1/4 of a mile away from the marsh field where they were feeding on rape. How many times has the bird been coming in committed to landing in the pack and suddenly sheared away with the afterburners on. Its all down to the awareness of a perceived threat of some sort real or imagined. The mass rising of the pigeons must be down to one bird seeing something and it takes off and boom the whole lot go. Sort of like a group action like the effect of Zebra stripes on the eye/ mind of a lion.

We all know what is best when the question come up regarding sitting or standing to take a shot T C , they tried this at our local clay ground a few months ago where a person tried to hit a fairly easy oncoming clay from a sitting position , to say they failed would be a under statement , mind you I am not surprised as clay shooters even moan when standing and the ground isn't level . When you are young and agile then your body have got a choice as it can do whatever you prefer , as you get a bit older then you can normally stand up to take a shot as long as you have rested in between , then if you live long enough your body is not to keen in keep getting up and down from a sitting position so the alternative is to stay seated and learn to shoot while sitting down , either that or sitting indoors with your slippers on while watching daytime television and waiting for the good lord to call your number out , and no I don't mean a game of bingo Edited November 3 by marsh man
TIGHTCHOKE
MM, he's a novice, hence my reply that he may be waiting in a field for a while. And yes I have seen the straw bale shoots put on a seated pair of clays, very few work out what to do before the 5 pairs have gone.

I knew exactly what you meant T C regarding waiting in a field for a while , I should know I have done it 100s of times . You have been on far more clay shoots than I have game shoots , I have heard a good many excuses for missing on game shoots but I think they were out numbered by the ones I have heard on clay shoots , yesterday they had a £200 prize for the high gun on a 25 bird round on a little do it yourself shoot just down the road from me , the round was from a telescopic load all with the two remote traps that were up there possibly 80 / 100 ft , I must admit they were hard and would had been way behind me , in fact I had a job to see them let alone being able to hit them but I am not a clay shooter and like I said they would had been far to hard for me , but when I asked some of them how they got on I must had heard every excuse under the sun and a few more I hadn't heard before , one bloke who won it the other week when he got 21 / 25 and won a £100 , he said his head is not with it as he flew from Turkey the day before and he had jet lag , another said he had the wrong chokes in , another his shot was to small , then the shot was to big and so on , the list was endless , I would hate to think what they would had said if they were sitting on a straw bale
TIGHTCHOKE
Yes, the list of excuses is ENDLESS. I shot pheasants in Yorkshire on Saturday and brought down 3/4's of what I shot at. I shot clays at Northampton SG on Saturday and shot a 71 X 100 , well below my average. Cartridges, gun, chokes, weather, the amount of light and the wind direction were absolutely fine, I however have been working night shifts and thankfully being driven to the shoots but am just so tired which makes me slower to react to the bird or the clay. We reasoned many years ago that all the possible options, excuses or reasons are nothing compared to the chap with his finger on the trigger.
