Shambam1962
Since I made my first dragon staff back in January, I’ve tried different techniques, and this time I thought I would try and make a few sticks using the brass collars which are readily available. The nosed out crook in Black Walnut is my favourite to date with the beaded brass collar on a hazel shaft. I really liked making this, as the wood was very nice to work with and didn’t encounter any problems, and has a beautiful grain. The 2 thumb sticks are Ash, and have been lightly scorched with a blow lamp and fitted on hazel shanks. I like how the grain pops out once coated with Danish Oil. And lastly my little laminated Walker on a beautiful holly shank with the bark left on and oiled as the other sticks. I made the walker for a friend of mine as a gift, and he’s in his late 80s and still very active and does his regular morning walk around our village. I have a few other sticks on the go, and will post at a later date when completed.

Shambam1962
Thanks ditchman and wisdom for your comments. With regards to time, I do a bit at a time and have a few blanks cut and waiting. I only made my first stick back in January and waited 60 years before attempting the stick. The internet is your friend with lots of information and some very good stick makers on YouTube. I had some idea what to do, as I would watch my father as a kid making sticks, but never paid a lot of attention to what he was making. I now have quite a few sticks made and it’s quite therapeutic and I just switch off when making them. I’ve made a few mistakes, and hopefully I learn by them and don’t make the same mistakes again. My wife has that look on her face, oh no, not another stick !
holloway
They are as good as I’ve seen anywhere,I like using the collars sometimes it just puts a nice finishing touch . I agree with you about the therapeutic side it’s a great way to empty the head for an hour or two. Your thumb sticks using different wood tops is an idea I had thought about but not got around to ,top work.
Old Boggy
Very nice indeed. They are all brilliant. Look forward to seeing your future work in due course. Many thanks for sharing. OB
Shambam1962
Thanks Holloway and Old Boggy for your comments. I feel I’m getting better at making them, as a newbie and learning new things with every stick I make. A mate of mine contacted a local joinery firm and purchased a car boot full of hardwood offcuts and gave me a good selection of oak, sapele and iroko wood to use for future handles. I’ve just received a piece of Purple Heart which I was impressed with on past handles, and plan to use on future projects. Now I have a larger cutting bandsaw, cutting the pieces into usable sizes for laminating handles, won’t be a problem.
Morkin
THEY ARE FANTASTIC MY FRIEND👍👏👏👏🙋 , I just love those lamanated ones , I think they could be the best I've seen done like that 👏👏👏
Shambam1962
Thanks Morkin for your comments. I’m pleased how the sticks eventually turned out. It’s a bit frightening when you take a blowtorch to a stick which you’ve spent time shaping and sanding. I like working with ash as the grain pops out when oil is applied.
