Steel and Lead

There is a lot of information on the criteria to shoot standard steel in a shotgun that does not have the proof to shoot superior steel but what is the difference in the design between the two and could a standard proof 2.75” chambered gun be converted to Fleur de Lis specification. Is it a case of lengthening the forcing cones and chambers, reaming the chokes out to no more than half and reproofing to the higher pressure.

Unless you're really in love with the guns you're referencing it's cheaper and safer to but a stamped gun apparently no more than 1/2 with standard steel and 1/4 with HP steel. Some.gunsa eg fabarm are proofed for tighter chokes, but it's all "in the shadows" for what's best and safest

There is no difference in the design, nor the structural integrity.
Most if not all nitro proofed guns can undergo HP steel shot proofing, and many have been. There is no ‘conversion’, the gun is simply proofed to a higher spec’.
Current advice is that you can shoot standard steel through any choke and HP steel through no tighter than half, although if that’s the case then why bother have it HP steel proofed?
Some shooters use HP steel through non steel shot proofed guns and through tighter chokes without problems.

no real need for hp steel, look close at basc balistic tests on penitration,at optimum range very little difference in the two,hp is overated i think, push it faster it slows down faster too.

well yeah until it reaches the speed of standard steel, it doesnt then keep slowing down at a faster rate.

its not really about pushing the shot faster, its about pushing heavier loads  of shot size that wont compress as easily at the same speed anyway. its all going between 1400-1500 fps. It just it takes less of an explosion to send 28g of lead 7.5 to that speed than it does 36g of steel 1s. bigger explosion bigger chamber pressure.

allot of the standard steel eco stuff is actualy about 200 fps slower than average lead loads.
