JKD
I've been lucky [?] to have eaten pigeon breast from 3 different counties,,,, Essex, Kent and Devon. The difference in flavour was quite distinctive. Essex, the first I ever tasted, was nice. Next I tried Kent pigeon,,,, very nice with a slightly finer flavour/taste. Next was from Devon,,,, very nice indeed, with a slightly sweeter, refined flavour/taste. The most I've eaten is obviously from Kent, but my favourite of the three is from Devon. Has anyone else eaten pigeon from different counties/areas and noticed the difference in flavour ? Edited October 22, 2023 by JKD
Mr grumpy
Surely it's down to what they are feeding on?
Joseph J
Totally agree with Mr Grumpy. Iv`e eaten pigeon breast only from our area, I find a difference with pigeons that have been feeding on peas or grain. I once had a challenge with a couple of shooting buddies that we would never shoot any thing we wouldn`t eat back in the 70s. I once shot a seagull by accident, don`t try it it was the rankest stringiest meat I have ever eaten. That said I`m still here to tell the tale. (Silly things you do when you are young). Oh I agree with you, but it's not only what they eat, but different soils ? Bit like beef and lamb [salt marsh etc ?]. Was just curious if anyone noticed distinct area taste differences with birds shot over the usual cereal crops 🤷

I've never eaten it, but I have a 1930s recipie book that suggests to net seagulls and then feed them a sort of porridge or gurel for about a week or two - then they are supposed to be better for cooking. 1 hour ago, old'un said: You have not tried Moorhen. like eating a tennis ball. Coot / Moorhen make quite nice risotto - just have to remove all the fat....
TIGHTCHOKE
I shot a Wood Pigeon on the border of Lincolnshire and Cambridgeshire, it was travelling about 35 mph and was heading north east against the wind. Its crop was full of wheat. When dressed and cooked it tasted just like all the other wood pigeons I have eaten. Breast dusted with seasoned flour and some spices and then shallow fried.
