Dave at kelton
I know there is no such thing as a bad day fishing but yesterday was better than most. A young man has recently moved into the village and wanted to start after a long lay off. I invited him as my guest to join me and took him to Broom Fisheries. This is on our doorstep and I can guarantee he catches. I set us up in a swim I know well. I fish the way I was taught over fifty years ago and it works. I make my own bread crumb mix to which I add sweetcorn and hemp. I then fish this in open ended feeders with either corn or bread as a hook bait. The hook is set up to lie a few inches below the feeder. He was almost immediately into his first small bream of about a pound. Having not caught a fish for years he was delighted. I then left him to it whilst I fished next to him. We were only casting four or five yards out where the water drops onto a shelf. First cast I had an Ide of a couple of pound and so it went. By the time he left after a couple of hours he had about a dozen fish. I fished on with a final bag of 36 fish, mostly IDE to 3lb. Unfortunately the carp had not put in an appearance but it was a great day. Today I meet the local Fisheries Board to discuss how we demonstrate fly tying at the Galloway Game Fair and how I help them get disadvantaged kids into fishing. An elongated, rather stout fish, the ide is blue-gray or blackish with silvery sides and belly and is usually about 30–50 cm (12–20 inches) long. Ide are a cyprinid (memebr of the carp family) and are closely related to Chub and Dace. 2 hours ago, Yellow Bear said: Introduced predator species More of an omnivore than an all out predator, very similar in their tastes to Chub.
