Flighting

Recommended Posts

I had a quick look round last Thursday and found large numbers of birds on spring wheat stubble. Due to the amount of ground and also numbers about I invited PC out for the day so we could split up and try keep them moving. I put PC on the side where the birds were mainly feeding and I headed to a different part of the farm to try and intercept them on a different line. I set up on a spinney out in the middle of the field that the birds were flighting over but like last week most didn’t want to know the decoys. After an hour the line moved and I decided to pack up and set up just out from an oak tree the birds were now flying past and shot them flighting as they headed to the block PC was on. I had an excellent few hours and killed some fantastic birds all with Bioammo 24gr 7’s in steel. I finished with 190 picked

I was pleased to receive the call from Ben and have started to be catagorised as " Rent a Scarecrow", I jest it was a great days shooting at these birds who do not decoy.

I started with four thawed birds and fifteen plastics with 3D covers on them and during the day I took them in and put all the birds shot out as decoys, 70 plus all round the tree. Over the day I  only had approx ten set for the pattern the majority of the birds flew over the pattern but within my  range. When I packed up I think I had about a dozen young birds and some of the adult birds were large, a real handful

Interesting, I have also noticed this last couple of weeks that they have gone decoy blind, not sure whats going through their mind but thats pigeons for you.

Lot of young ones around here at the minute but wont be long before they disappear.

Did you have a magnet out?

The four thawed birds were used , two on the magnet and two flyers.

Excellent shooting - especially with such a light cartridge.

What sort of ranges were you takeing them at?

WOW!! How many birds are there in Warwickshire? I've found a newly drilled field with, maybe 50-100 going there and will be pleased to get into double figures today!! Same problem of course, plenty of other fields for them to go to once I start shooting, then I'll be lucky to get a shot every 20 minutes. Warwickshire, Wiltshire, perhaps I can rename East Anglia as Wessex and it will help?? Cheers and Well done!!

Just think how many you would had got if you had a slow look round instead of a quick look round ☺️ , joking aside that was a superb bag of Pigeons and good to see one of our favorite posters ( P C ) getting amongst the action , doing what he do best is better than any medicine his doctor dish out , maybe it took it out of him a bit but he no doubt felt a lot better sitting in his hide than if he had stayed at home , in the past the dealers used to pay a better price in October as less Pigeons would be shot , this would be down to the game shoots putting Pigeon shooting on hold rather than the shortage of Pigeons .:good: MM

Certainly Marsh man, one days shooting is much better than eighteen months of treatment!!

The irony is that during my stay in hospital I would watch Utube pigeon shooting in the daytime and Prime sniper films at night.

Well you got your priority right P C, it just don't seem the same watching Pigeon shooting video's at night , mind you a nice way to pass your time while being looked after by the young nurses .

How did your bundle of energy on four legs turn out ? , would he / she now be 3 / 4 years old ?    :good:   MM

He helps me walk my eight miles a day, recalls well and picks up pigeon on the garage floor. Not tried him out in the field as he is my first shooting dog and I’ve been a visitor on Bens shoot lately. Will endeavour to use his nose on the rape.

Brilliant , they do make lovely shooting companions and I am sure you will find him a great help now the rape is getting tall .

GOOD LUCK and keep us informed of his progress :good:
