mossy835
in the morning when i turn the key the battery is 9 years old,the lights flick on but go off, could it be the starting motor or battery,
old'un
Blimey, sounds like battery, it must be as flat as a pancake for the dash lights to go out, try putting your magnet on the terminals to see if it powers it, if you have one that is? old'un
If it starts the car then there is plenty of power in the battery, sound like it maybe a relay to your headlights, electrical faults are a pig to sort out, try banging/tapping/shaking, light switches, wiring, light relay, if none of those work you might need a car electrician. amateur
At nine years, that battery doesn't owe you anything. It's also good practice not to have the lights, or indeed anything else electrical, switched on when you are starting the car.
mossy835
lights are not on when starting it,they flick on only when starting.
JohnfromUK
If they are modern high intensity discharge type lamps (HID) they need quite a high minimum voltage and may shut down whilst the started is drawing it's (very high) current, particularly if the battery is getting old as you get more voltage drop then. Not sure if LED lights do the same? Older type filament lamps will probably have a relay that is dropping out during the started cranking. 2 minutes ago, mossy835 said: lights are not on when starting it,they flick on only when starting. Sorry, my post above assumed they were flickering off! If they are 'automatic' (i.e. come on when it gets dusk/dark), the low voltage during cranking may be upsetting the light detection circuitry. In any case, I suspect that an old battery is the real culprit.
