marsh man Posted Monday at 15:15 Report Share Posted Monday at 15:15 If the Pigeons are getting disturbed every day with the farmer going past and putting them off and then with him seeing some back on so out come the scarecrows how on earth do they expect you to shoot any serious numbers , do he want you as a full time unpaid bird scare'r for the privilege of letting you shoot ( his ) pigeons . MM Because if you listen to some a bird scarer does not put the pigeons off.

Pigeons had been hitting the field for nearly a week. A couple of huge flocks turned up and dropped straight onto the crop, nearer his scarecrows than my decoy pattern. They never looked at, or maybe never saw, my decoys. A shot put them off forever. A few passing birds had a little look and I shot 8 in 3 hours. Not what I had hoped for but that's life. I'm sure the pattern in the article would not have helped, I had the wrong field or the right field on the wrong day or something. Just a magnet and 5 full-bodied decoys. Loads in the trees waiting to feed when I arrived at 8.00am. They left, en masse and when they came back in big groups and didn't see any birds in the trees or on the crop, just kept going without a glance at the field. Small groups, singles and pairs were not so lucky. Some were clearly magnet aware and flared away well out but I picked up another 21 which didn't. So that's 70+ in 3 outings on winter rape, which I am quite pleased with. Day 4 today.
