Toyota Hi Lux

Several Toyota models are big targets, notably RAV4, HiLux and LandCruiser (UK type).  They can be taken by a CANBUS attack.  Toyota's statement and a thread here;

Not sure what (if anything) Toyota are offering for HiLux, but Toyota have a retrofit 'protection plate' for RAV4 models that goes under the front wing somehow (the CANBUS attack is made through the rear of the headlight assembly apparently). For LandCruisers thay are offering a 'free' tracker, but it is fitted free and comes with 3 years subscription - but after that you have to pay an annual subscription to Tracker - and I don't think it is cheap (my previous BMW had a Tracker and it was good, but that had a one off fee for the car's life with that owner).

The problem with trackers is that if they are activated, the Police may (or may not) act, and you may get a trashed/wrecked car back - or maybe nothing at all as most are either containered and exported, or broken for parts.  My insurance no longer gives a discount for trackers.

I am told that the best thing is s "Ghost" immobiliser system, but even that may result in considerable vehicle damage whilst 'they' try and steal it.

A locked garage is the best security to prevent thefts from your driveway.

Agreed, but for many - they don't have a garage, and if they do, many modern 4 x 4s are a very tight fit even if they fit at all.  My old type Defender is an easy fit in my garage, but (pre 2024 type) Toyota Land Cruiser (only slightly wider, but significantly shorter than a HiLux) is a very tight fit even with mirrors folded.  A Hilux would be a VERY tight fit on length.

I built my garage extra tall with Land Rovers with roof racks in mind. 😉
I never leave a vehicle outdoors if I can help it, and don’t sleep a wink if I do.
And we don’t live in a bad area.

I agree the standard old garage size of 16 by 8 is not much use for modern, wider cars.

I thought I did, but cars are so much larger (wider especially) than when I built it!
