steve_b_wales Posted Tuesday at 13:08 Report Share Posted Tuesday at 13:08 (edited) First post: A friend of mine has a Hawke Vantage 4-16 x 50 scope, and when using the zoom collar, all is well between 4-10 power, but from 10-16 it starts to get tight, making it harder to operate using fingers only. He got in touch with Hawke aftersales, and they asked him if, before zeroing the scope, had he made sure that the reticule was optically dead centre, as if not, it could cause this problem. To be honest, neither of us have heard of this before, but like me, he always does this with all his scopes. The scope has now been sent back to Hawke under warranty (2 years old) for them to look at it. Reply from Hawke: Your item has been inspected with the following findings: 1 x 14293 Vantage 30 WA SF IR 4-16x50 - When first received, the scope was placed on our collimation machine and the reticle had been set at 10moa Down (40 clicks) and 10moa Right (40 clicks), as viewed. Once the reticle was re-centred, the scope was shock tested several times and no zero shifting was evident. The turrets have their full compliment of adjustment in all directions. With regards to the 'tight' zoom ring, this has most likely been caused by the erector tube having been pushed over to the right by 40 clicks, and is therefore impinging on the zoom mechanism. Now that the reticle has been re-centred, the zoom ring is working as normal. Please be aware that if the scope is correctly mounted, the windage adjustment does not need to be moved, this adjustment is mostly used to compensate when firing in a cross wind. We wondered if you had any questions before we return the scope. We look forward to hearing from you. This has certainly surprised my friend and indeed, myself too! matone Posted Tuesday at 13:54 Report Share Posted Tuesday at 13:54 Yep,check the rings etc for alignment ,you may need adjustable mounts to sort it.

Hawke were referring to the scope itself, not the rings, although I do agree with you that rings need to be checked for correct alignment. Ultrastu Posted Tuesday at 16:20 Report Share Posted Tuesday at 16:20 Interesting stuff . Some times a barrel doesn't align perfectly with the scope rail /dovetails . And we have to crank the turrets to compensate . Break barreled guns can suffer massively from this .and pcps can get knocked and if there is a front barrel band this can hold a barrel out of alignment . Aa. s400 springs to mind . Bull pups too . Sometimes just poor manufacturing is to blame . As above a set of adjustable mounts should correct most issues . Or slight shimming of the scope rings my get you nearer to centre . Cheers . This was all about the zoom ring getting tight when the power went from 10-16 power. 4-10 power was okay. The scope was actually zeroed and spot on according to my friend. It was just the issue with the zoom ring suddenly getting tight.
