Hunter
I am thinking of putting together a decent long range rifle, for hunting and target. I have an idea for a setup, I was thinking some form of tactical rifle. My first choices area: Unique alpine 6.5X55, AI .243-.300wm-.308, or a simple Remington 700 in the previous mention callibers. It must not be a too heavy cal for deer stalking, but also suitable for long range 1000yds. (I have seen .243's used quite well to 1000yds). Scope is another matter.. im thinking a nice big open 'sniper' turrets for dialing in, with plenty of adjustment for long range shooting. A decent scope can easily cost a little over £1000 I am currently working and saving to build this setup, and will put in for the variation in January. That should give me enough to get the funds sorted out. (il have to wait half a year for the certificate). Cheers for looking, if you have thought of this before, what would be your choice? Mungler
For that money, I would spend £1k on the set up and £2.5 k on a motorbike or car to drive nearer to the target, thereby making a saving on those long range requirements. OneEye
(il have to wait half a year for the certificate). Are you serious? Down here they take about a fortnight for a variation. They did my last one inside a working week.

Motorbikes? argh.. bust me shoulder with one, need a break. Im also putting some of my savings into the little suzuki Jeep im building.. that should be a useful shooting wagon. Waiting on my shoulder to decide my future carreer. Still living at my sodding home. OneEye, the waiting list here is long. Can take anything from 6 weeks to a few months from what I have seen
dunganick
RPA quadlock (made on tonbridge ) in 6.5x55 with a mcmillan stock and the magazine action not the single shot. ontop a nightforce (cant remember which one, but a big one) This will leave you change to get some reloading gear, and learn to make your own reloads. Browning
Hunter, I'm working on a similar project at the moment. I've decided on a 6.5x47 Lapua, which will be used for everything. My main objective was for a 600 yds long range varmint rifle, with the odd stretch to 1000 for range work etc. My rifle is being built now and should be ready April/May. The rifle is:- Rem700 action, blueprinted. 26" Border barrel, in Rem PSS (Varmint) profile. Jewell HVR trigger. Badger Ordnance dropout magazine system. Badger ordnance Picatinny rail. Devcon bedded into a Wild Dog Tactical stock. I still haven't decided on optics yet, but it will probably be S&B or Nightforce. PM me if you want more info on this. Wookie
Sako TRG in .338 super Lapua. Looks ugly, very ugly, but works. I haven't got beyond the rifle yet, but I'd probably spend the rest on a scope to match it.
Oly
For me it would be similar to Browning's, and one I'll be working on when I shoot out my current barrel!! .243AI Rem 700 Action Pillar Bedded Border barrel (the only way to go IMO) Jackson Universal two stage trigger Custom made hardwood adjustable stock Nightforce/IOR Scope Apel mounts Already got the reloading gear, might also go slightly over budget...maybe, but it will be worth it! kdubya
If and its a sodding big IF I could ever justify that outlay on a gun ( kids and grandkids will keep me a pauper) I would love a nesika .270 have had the pleasure of using one and god was it nice, accuracy was UNBELIEVABLE, cheers KW
Hunter
Thanks for your replies guys! Already looking up the parts you have listed. Mentioned above was a .338 Lap Mag. I doubt Sussex police would give me a .338 for fallow deer would they?

I would ring Steve Bowers of Specialist Rifles and tell him what I wanted it for, give him the green light, then settle down for a long wait. The product, and wait, would be worth it though, oh yes indeedy!!!!!!!!!!!!! http://www.specialistrifleservices.co.uk/index.html ft
MC
Have it built by Fulton's of Bisley and go for a RPA Quadlite action and Match trigger Border barrel in calibre of your choice, Then put it in a Gemini Aluminium stock A nice S & B Scope on the top and you're are done. Just about in your budget as well
Hunter
Cheers again chaps! My mentor has compiled a setup it 6.5x55 which he deems suitable for my needs and land. It will be along the lines of a Sauer 202 Match, (yes not exactly tactical) and a beefy scope on top. Screw cut for a moderator, or muzzle break when tarket shooting. This is not definet yet, I am still looking into it. It has an adjustable cheack peice (hardly visible) and is suitable for both targets and game. Whilst it has match grade barrel for decent accuracy, and also more cost effective then the Unique Alpine, or Accuracy International. Sauer 202 Match 6.5x55 This RPA rifle looks good too... oh the coices...
Dunkield
I was going to Sauer, but didn't think it fitted your need. Coicindently I know someone with a 202 Outback and someone with a 202 Match both in 6.5 The Outback weighs less then my rimfire, and the Match weighs a ton. If you get a Match and stick a mod on it, it will weight even more and won't make a very nice stalking rifle, unless you are a masochist
Oly
Then put it in a Gemini Aluminium stock For a range and hunting rifle ...or are you just describing your fantasy Martin!!

They shoot straight, and generally feel better to shoot.. in my opinion.. Il see if I can get hold of one to see if its a suitable gun. Not quite 'tactical' enough for my needs, but if my mentor pushes me in that direction, I will do it. He has been right about my other rifles so far. I would prefer a synthetic stock, as I dont like to worry about woodwork getting dinged, scratched, or wet.. ideally I would like a rifle that could spend a day or night out in the rain, and only require a good oily rag after. TRG22 then. It's a pity you couldn't have made Bisley back in the summer you could have had a go with one in .
Hunter
Yeh im really bummed about that I will do everything possible to make it to the next one! passed my driving test no so long back, so things like this are possible now My real reason for wanting a tactical is for range days like that
