Pump actions

I'm now looking for a 24"-26" barrel pump gun, must be 3 shot. So far I've looked at the Remmy 870 and the Mossberg 500/Maverick. The gun may need upgrading in the future to FAC spec, and I'd also like a multi choke. I like the synthetic stocked Maveric most, are they any good?

Mossberg synthetic all day long.

I got a multichoke barrel for mine - or rather there was an old (Remington I think) barrel kicking round the gun shop floor with a 1/2 choke multichoke in the end and it fitted the Mossberg.

Shoots very very well, is indestructable and is a gun I wouldn't ever sell - way too much fun.

If I was to pick up a mossberg in any length I could get a 24" vented rib barrel with multichoke for $130 from the states. I'm not sure what the import rules are, but I could always have one bought and sent as a gift! I've heard good reports about the Mossbergs, but it's always good to talk to people who own them. I've also seen a cheap Winchester 1200 locally, 25" barrel and multichoke. I'm thinking I'll stick with the Mossberg for the synthetic bits though. Cheers for the reply, keep 'em coming

Mungler is wrong. Wrong. The Remington 870 Wingmaster is the world's best-selling shotgun. It really is indestructible, it's more refined than the Mossberg and there are more after-market accessories and parts available for it.

I sold my first Wingmaster and regretted it almost instantly. I bought another one in synthetic, and now use it almost every day. The gun soaks up all the abuse I give it, and performs admirably.

I think the reason I'm starting to like the Mossberg is down to price! They're very cheap for their reliability. The 870 is a very nice gun, but they seem quite hard to find. If I could get hold of a 24" one with a multi choke I'd consider it, as Mossberg don't seem to import that spec to the UK

I recently sold a Winchester pump and I won't be buying another - however if you like heavy wood (fnarr fnarr) then the Winchester is the "welsh dresser" of pump actions

Erm, unlike the other "choke thread", the barrel that I got with my Mossberg was fixed choke and so short it could have been sawn off - it was for solid slugs because it had a target site on it. It was pretty useless for anything past about 20 yards. With the ribbed multichoke barrel I have on mine, there's nothing you can't do / hit with it.

I don't need a multi choke really. York guns have a new Mossberg Maverick 24" Slug gun (cyl choke) for £325 so I'll probably buy that. I'll give it a go and see how it patterns. You can get 24" vented rib M/C barrels for them in the states for $130, so if I get fed up with cyl choke I can always get my mate to send me one over.

EDIT....Just read Munglers post, but I'm still going to try it!

I've got an 870 Express Magnum, and as the previous poster has said, it just keeps going, and is very easy to maintain. I shoot vermin and sporting clays with it and hasn't failed me once, Pity about the operator though !!

I've got the multi-choke barrel, but I have never found Rem. Chokes in the UK ... anyone know anywhere that stocks them ??

Lucid ±;o)

NJC, have you researched whether it is possible to have barrels shipped over from the USA easily? I'm not sure what the import procedure is (although I'm fairly sure you can't buy gun parts from outfitters like Cabelas without an import licence). The hassle might not be worth the USD130 for the barrel, when you could just shell out more for the right gun here.

Pumps are something that a lot of people have lurking unused in their cabinets. You might be wise to post a Wanted ad on here and GT, to see what you can unearth, as an open-sighted slug-barrelled gun isn't going to me much use on a daily basis.

Go on, buy a Remington.

Okay, I dug this out - this was the other pump I had and recently outed.

That was a Winchester pump and the Winchester barrel wouldn't fit the Mossberg. Now, through elimination I believe that it is the Remington barrels that will fit the Mossberg.

Anyhows, I have played with many and no one can sway me from the Mossberg.

There's plenty around second hand and they are cheap as 1000 carts on the second hand market - get one of each, you know you want to.....

Anythings possible! Where is the serial number on the guns? A bit of pipe in a box from the states was my plan. I thought only whole guns were restricted? What's an import license anyway? :/:/

i had a mossberg maverick and must say they are junk and simply will not last my friends busted on him a week ago parts actually came rate out of the guts, i hate remington but a rem870 wingmaster is leeps and bounds a head of the maverik, you can buy a rem870 express which is not as nice to look at as the wingmaster but will work just as good and is only minutley more expensive than the maverick, other sugestions is the bps or browning pump maybe you call it a miroku and a winchester 1300 ranger if you can find one.

ps pumps are alot of fun :/

There is a Browning BPS in 24" on GT, if I recall. I nearly bought it, but I want a longer barrel. The BPS is a great bit of kit, as it ejects downwards, so it's a left-hander's dream. And it looks good too.

You might want to wait for someone more knowledgeable to reply, but I believe that a barrel is still a restricted item. You certainly can't have it shipped over with UPS etc.

Hi mate. I got a Mossber maverick, black synthetic but it's got 30 inch barrel I think. 3" chamber and 3 shot. I don't use it at all now since I got my semi so if you want it, it's yours for 200 quid. Only mention it because you're local and the gun's just been in the cabinet for the last 2 years.

PM sent regarding the above.

I'm going to take a look at this Mossberg sometime and see how it feels. I've always wanted a Remmy Wingmaster but I can always pick one up later on if I feel the need. The Browning BPS on Guntrader was a FAC gun, gutted! They're like rocking horse **** round here! I think I need to e-mail my mate in the states, I can see a 24" piece of steel tubing arriving in the post sometime in the near future. I have a SGC, it's not like I'll be doing anything too dodgy :/
