May look at changing cars this year, up to £10K and needs to be 4x4.

will spend more time on the road as a daily driver than on the fields and tracks (so it needs to be comfortable), but it needs to be capable when required.

so what have you got and why, and what would you suggest?

Subaru Forester XT Turbo

Tows a tank, climb a mountain, fords a river, outpaces a Boxster, does 28+MPG and cheap insurance. Best all round car I've ever owned. No I don't work for Subaru.

My choice was slightly odd, but I went looking for the best car for our budget and after weeks of searching I bought a Honda HRV 5 door. It is slightly odd looking from the front, but is without doubt the best car I have ever owned!

It has enough room for the dog in the boot, plus 4 adults. It is comfortable, quiet and as economic as a Ford Focus. It is not so big that the wife cannot drive it round, but gives you a raised driving position which is much more comfortable for someone of my height. It has a part time 4wd system that cuts in when the front wheels start slipping and is more than capable with some light off road action in the shape of driving down and track to get to a shoot or making your way across a mud infested field.

It depends on the sort of sized vehicle you need, but I would say you cannot go too far wrong with something like the X Trail or RAV4. If you want a pickup, take a look at the Isuzu Rodeo. They are good value and capable vehicles. Either that or the classic Hi Lux. I would love a pickup, but need somewhere for the dog in the back and find that when you put a body on them, they loose "that look".

A lot of pickups tend have handling not too much unlike a stubborn snake when they are not carrying any weight in the back. They need a few bags of sand in to given them some traction. My dad had Hi Lux twin cab soon after they were released, it was an import with slightly larger engine and that thing would tail slide around in the wet, even with a moderate load in the back.

I have a 07 nissan navara outlaw which cost 21k but you can get a cheaper one

but this year I might try try isuzu and the one I had before was mitsi L200 which

I was is a bad crash with when a idiot came full belt into my side and after I recovered

the policeman came to see me and said if I had been in car it would have killed me

so there is another good reason to own a 4x4.

Like Baldrick say's Disco takes some beating but are a bit on the thirsty side, don't be put off by the lack of performance of the TD5, trust me that can be sorted. :good:

Good thing is there are plenty of independants for parts, servicing etc.

Best thing to do is to test drive as many as you can and see what you prefer.

Nissan X-Trail is probably the best of the smaller 4x4's wouldn't go for a Freelander due to the bad Crash test results and the 1.8's are very prone to Head Gasket Failure.

I find that most of the Pickup's seem to have a very "bouncy" ride.

Another option is a Kia Sorento, but get at leat XS Spec. that way you get permanent 4 Wheel Drive, leather and loads of other bits.
