SPEEDY
This is just a little write up one my last hunt for this deer season, all in all I could have done it better if I had have had the time to zero my scope after changing it over but the iron sights did the trick so I guess that I can't really complain. The other very important thing that I for got was the box that had my Rain coat, gas stove, pots oh and of course the bloody food!!!! I can tell you that buying a 21 piece box of KFC as emergency rations just doesn't cut it IMO. But to the hunting, I arrived on Friday afternoon and drove around the area to see what was about and to find the boundaries of my hunting area, 20min later I nearly ran into a small heard of about 6 Deer with the 4X4 that decided to bust from cover right in front of me, I was very disappointed to find out that the Bucks had cast their antlers so I stood no chance of finding a trophy (as to be expected at this time of year) so I decided to move strait onto recognisance for opening day of next season. I got to sleep early and was up at 0430am and hunting by 0500am, I made my way about 1.5km down the track that I was camping on and made my way into the tree line and started my stalk. I didn't see any deer or even a great deal of new sign, but I did find a few good patches of rub trees that I took note of for next season. There were plenty of rabbits about and I was almost going to take a few but I figured that I had plenty of them at home and there was still a lot of space in the freezer to fill, that proved to be a wise decision as when I was just 400m for camp I caught sight if a young doe that was just the right size to fill that space. I checked the wind and stalked to it's position from lower in the gully and made my to the wash it was headed down, When I got to the point where I thought that I could cut it off I saw no sign of it, that was when I looked down hill and there it was 30m away. I thumbed my safety of and that’s when the wind changed, oh ******, it stopped looked strait back in my direction and raised it's tail and bolted to the right. Up came my rifle and by the time I lined the unfamiliar iron sights on it there was now 50m between us, I aimed for the base of the neck as 220gn Taipan at almost 3000fps can damage a lot of meat, and let off a shot, I saw blood fly. I started to lower my rifle but it just shock it's head, changed direction and continued to run, ******. I followed it's blood trail for almost 200m before I found it dead in a gully with it's throat blown out, another 2-4 inches back and it would have dropped on the spot, that really goes to prove that it's not what you hit them with but where you hit them. But I had an esky full of meat and it was only 0700am, 500m later I was back at camp, dressed my meat and decided to look around for next year. One thing that I did see a lot of was Brumbies while you can't shoot them in state forests ATM with this "horse flue" crises going on that might change (fingers crossed) Here are two Stallions that I have my eye on and the moment that their on the cards I'm going back to get the big red and white one for a rug, the brown one actually had a charge at me when he found out that I was only 30 yards away!!! SPEEDY
good shooting there itlle be fun to skin out a horse post some picks when you get your new rug I'm not holding my breath, the tree hugger's are are trying to stop the National parks and wildlife service from culling them in the parks, even though their causing major damage to the environment, go figure? I have some private land that I can hunt them on so that might have to do, it's just a shame that they don't look as good as these ones. great shooting , that is one thing i will have to do in my life time Yep Deer season and the roar starts in one months time and I'm looking foward to bagging a stag on opening weekend, oh and topping up the freezer again ATM it's full of Goat again
