I'm going out shooting this week for the first time in months(due to work and being down right lazy). Can't wait to get back in the field......I'm taking my newest little un for a walk in the pram later with my bino's so I can suss out the pigeon strengths.

To my main point......I have had the shotty's locked away all this time(about 3 months) and have not looked at them in this time....they were well oiled and cleaned prior to being put to sleep. I have not bothered to clean them/re oil in this time. Does anyone do anything different, ie how often do you clean your guns when not using them for a lenght of time?

I pull the guns I don't use out of the cabinet every coupe of months usually. If they're lightly oiled with something like Napier spray unless you do something to wear it off again they should remain fine for a long time. I would also suggest a VP90 pouch if you don't get out often. It releases a vapour inside your safe which coats the gun and stops rust. The pouches last for a year and cost about a fiver. I always use one :good:

I try to clean any cartridge gun as soon as possible, after every shooting session. With air guns, I'm not so scrupulous: every 5th time, 10th time, whatever time!

If I haven't shot a gun, I see NO reason to clean it. They get "dirty" only when you shoot them! :good: But I do believe in taking a gun out every few months, looking it over, and oiling it. :good:

Cheers!

i always clean my guns after use no matter what.

a quick rod through the barrels hardly takes a moment. a more thorough clean every couple of uses is sufficient i have found.

provided the gun is dry and clean at the time of putting it back in the cabinet you should have NO issues.

i am now 28 and have had a 20bore Laurona since i was 12. the gun has had thousands of shots through it and by employing the above it is in as good condition as since i bought it.

it has spent long periods of time with no use. for example when i was at uni i would shoot the gun once a year on boxing day and that was it. this happened probably 5 or more years in row. the gun was not cleaned between these episodes of use and has not suffered adversely as a result. the cabinet is kept in a very dry/warm room.

my dealer recently valued the gun at the same money as what was paid for it 16 years ago.

as for air rifles; i have never cleaned an air rifle in my life, save wiping mud from it! :good:
