Jonnyni
Whilst out decoying Pigeons in a laid barley field I was amazed to see a hen Mallard landing in the middle of the decoys, she didn't stay too long which is no surprise but it did give me and my mate a laugh. Anyone else have any stange birds into the pigeon decoys.

eugene molloy
Funny birds? Not really, but... No 1) A microlight out of gas; buump! right in the middle of the spread. Silly B (ie person) asked if he could borrow my mobile phone to send for assistance. Asked if I could borrow his lighter to set the damned plane on fire. We didn't part the best of chums. No 2) The local Hunt...three times thus far....still good chums. No 3) A group of elderly ladies out walking; they couldn't work out why the birds weren't flying off! After I popped out of the ground and explained all, one of the old ducks asked if she could take a few birds home for her even more elderly mum. Parted on on slightly hilarious terms, I think they'd all had an excellent lunch in the village pub. No 4) A C130 Hercules about 2" (all right, it felt like that) off the deck on the day we had the total eclipse. Toilet roll job. Eug

I know it well Eug... We have them around here from RAF Lyneham doing sorties in groups of 3 at about 300 feet. Its quite interesting when they come over woodland and open pasture as you might think there are no woodies about but it really puts them into the air. One of my close friends was ex Raf A/C officer in a Herc and he also used to come occassional Pigeon shooting with me. He always said that flying low over the countryside was a good way to flush the birds up and that pigeon were everywhere but not always where you think they might be.... jimdfish
I had a radio controlled glider fly over me the other day and crash spectacularily into the fields behind me. Never found the owner. Scared every pigeon off for miles. They must have thought it was some sort of sh#thouse massive hawk. jimDfish P.S I have a family of mallards that regularily walk up the field and sit in front of the hide. Very itchy trigger finger

Admittidly it dant land in the middle of my decoys butI reckon ive got the C130 beat. I was out shooting rabbits last year, was a little after dawn and they were just starting to appear for the morning. An American B1 Lancer soon screwed up my chances of a decent shoot that day! I can honestly say it was the loudest noise ive ever heard. Every living creature within 10 acres or so ducked and ran for cover, myself included. For something that big it just came out of nowhere, there was no noise at all untill it passed us. I dont want to estimate the altitude but it was low, real low. Brown trousers job for sure. Stupid thing is we have no air bases around for miles, only RAF Cosford but that wouldnt have anything to do with an American B1 Bomber. I know they are around RAF Fairford all the time but im miles from there. Anyway thats my best shooting story
Hawkeyedavey
Ye i have to agree with a.mass Why do some of the members of this site condone the shooting of birds of prey. Just think of the damage this type of conduct can do to our sport :< In June i was out shooting with a mate over some decoys. We had a good morning shot 20 + pigeons. We had placed about 15 dead pigeons mixed with the deek's We had seen a few buzzards soaring above us. One buzzard was'nt as high as the rest. This bird suddenly closed its wings and stooped. It had seen our decoys and wanted some dinner. It landed on one of the pigeons and started to pull the feathers out. It never even entered my head to shoot it. It soon spotted us and took off. I think that type of experience makes our sport even more pleasurable
Teal
If your poults are being taken collect a whole batch of those "AOL SIGN UP NOW" CD's and hang them up around the pens especially so they blow in the wind. I agree, it's great to see birds of prey, and I even like it when I see the occasional badger, for what they to wasp and bee's nests they have my utmost respect
Dave TS
My shooting partner was decoying in a field of peas several months ago when a dirty great fox came galloping across the field, picked up one of his shell decoys without stopping, looked somewhat bewildered, spat it out again in disgust, and continued across the field
