Ferretboy111
Well this is the time of year when trapping can be very effective in reducing predator numbers before the mass boom of reproduction, so 3 days ago i decided to set up a line of fenn mk4 traps and a recently new trap to me called a magnum/konings trap. On a part of my shoot down a valley i noticed 2 squirrels by a hopper so i decided to set up some traps. Anyway, i took a series of photos to explain what practice i tend to adopt at my hoppers this time of year. http://i107.photobucket.com/albums/m317/fe...oy111/setup.jpg This shows the hopper (which is full all year round) at the end of an old piece of ploughed maize. The situation of the hopper is perfect for game birds aswell as trapping, showing how ive placed a rat bait station, a tunneled mark 4 fenn trap and a magnum trap place from a branch (Adopted from the dvd "Keepers diary, modern day predator control, very effective at catching squirrels. http://i107.photobucket.com/albums/m317/fe...1/fenntrap1.jpg By the edge of the gate i have incorporated a tunnel and fenn trap site, in which over 3 days i have killed 2 squirrels from. http://i107.photobucket.com/albums/m317/fe...y111/setup2.jpg This photo shows the bait station and magnum trap, the series of photos to follow aim to explain how the trap is set and how effective it is at dispatching squirrels. http://i107.photobucket.com/albums/m317/fe...111/trapset.jpg http://i107.photobucket.com/albums/m317/fe...11/trapopen.jpg http://i107.photobucket.com/albums/m317/fe...11/trapset2.jpg http://i107.photobucket.com/albums/m317/fe...11/trapset3.jpg http://i107.photobucket.com/albums/m317/fe...11/squirrel.jpg So far over 3 days i have killed 5 squirrels in the magnum trap and 2 in the fenn trap tunnel, after seeing only 2. I have been checking the traps in the morning and evening. Five squirrels shown, as i had caught another two this evening but didnt have the camera on me= http://i107.photobucket.com/albums/m317/fe.../5squirrels.jpg Total of 7 squirrels dead, from 2 traps in 3 days. Pictured below are 2 more fenn trap sites in which i have not caught anything as yet, and im not expecting to catch anything in them untill the cover around grows alittle, but as they are now established they should blend in well. Both traps have been set on a hedge/ditch line directly after a gateway, so that any vermin breaking from one side of the ditch to the other will hopefully find my tunnels irresistable. http://i107.photobucket.com/albums/m317/fe...1/fenntrap2.jpg http://i107.photobucket.com/albums/m317/fe.../fenntrap2c.jpg Other= http://i107.photobucket.com/albums/m317/fe...1/fenntrap3.jpg http://i107.photobucket.com/albums/m317/fe.../fenntrap3c.jpg Anyway, i hope that this has made people want to get out there and set a few traps to help control some of the vermin on their permission, this is not the only way of trapping, but its the way that works for me and is legal. Alex (P.s have been building 4 larsen traps for controlling the magpies/crows on my shoot so will post up about them when i eventually set them out.) Teal
Good stuff- this is the time of year to be running those snares, larsens and fenns. If you've got a decent line of them out some form of transport is handy to check them.
Ferretboy111
Cheers guys, yeah im lucky as most of the traps i can drive right up to, and the others just walk to. Id love to place loads more around but just havent the time to check all them as many woods are hard to get to. Georgehare, that sounds a very good idea, i havent ever caught a stoat in my fenn traps, ive seen them about though, i shall try it with the next 2 i put down. Alex (P.s caught another 2 squirrels this morning, and can see that the rat bait is working well as am finding dead rats everywhere, oh and little pink rat droppings )

Ferretboy111
Cheers guys, am hopefully getting my magpies this weekend from a keeper friend to start up my larsen trapping. Have caught 10 squirrels now from the two traps. In my opinion they are the most easiest animal to trap where hoppers are concerned. Stealth Stalker
Alex its still a bit too cold for larsen trapping mate, your call bird will more than likely die of exposure SS
Ferretboy111
16 squirrels now- Alex
Teal
A friend of mine has been running 3 larsens for the past week and will continue onwards and through the nesting season. They are catching well and the call birds are doing fine. I'd get them out to maximise the trapping time.
Ferretboy111
Yeah had my call bird out a week now, havent caught a single thing. Have seen magpies all around it, but im not sure about anyone else, but maybe they arent that territorial yet? I just cant see why i havent caught any. Ferretboy111
Not baiting it with anything, just have a call bird in it. Alex
Teal
That's why you're not catching . Put half a rabbit/pigeon with flesh side up in each of the catching compartments.
highseas
thats what the call birds are for ihad 2 larsens out up the farm and i was a caching 2-3 a week with just a call bird no bait needed
Ferretboy111
Going to say, i shall give it a go, but ive always just let the call bird catch for me, as the magpies try to harras it and jump into the compartments. Usually catch alot using that method. Alex
