Pirate
I know very little about dogs, but the annual Cruft's show started today, and there's already talk of a ringers & skulduggery. People are allegedly, putting bets on certain dogs before the odds are out. Can anyone explain! Pirate:

Cranfield
There is so much money in the Showing and Breeding game, that it just sounds like the usual jealousies among some of the professionals that attend. You only have to get on the fringes of showing dogs to get exposed to the pettiness and nastiness that exists.
Wookie
Watched the highlights from the Toy section last night. What a waste of biomass those dogs are. At least the Utility class had some absolutely superb quality dogs in. Will be glued to the telly tonight when the gundogs are on though. Come on the Springers! Highlander
Dog breeding is wide open to abuse...don't think the oh so high and mighty Kennel Club guarantee that a dog has been bred from such and such a sire or damn as the breeder is trusted to fill in the forms. One day they might bring in DNA testing but until they do you'll never know if your buying a pig in a poke! Does it go on? Of course it does! Pirate
Still following the Cruft's Dogma! It now transpires, William Hill has suspended all betting on who will win 'Best in Show', after the odds shortened considerably yesterday. People have been staking substantial sums on the winner coming from the utility category, which includes Dalmatians and miniature poodles. Apparently, the competition may feature a "super-dog" that William Hill has previously not heard of. You learn something every day. Wookie
I really hope it's at least a sensible breed and not one of the toy ones. Hell, I'd like to see a terrier take the title rather than a Japanese Chin or a Chihuahua.
gdunc
Is it wrong to say I quite like the Fly ball competitions? Flyball is ok - it's the uber campfest that is heelwork to music that i can't stand. Impressive control - yes, gayest thing in the world - absolutely! tulkyuk
So in other words the outcome has already been decided- even though the show has only just started Edited March 7, 2008 by tulkyuk
Hardy
Whilst I agree most of the Toys are awful (worst of all imho is Chineese Crested) there are some good ones in there too! Our little Griffons are more terrier like than anything - and they all want to be gundogs (except the one who cowers under the sofa at any sort of bang!). This is Trinnie - 6yr old with a life time qualification for Crufts I read the stories of the 'ringer' too - unless someone was able to bribe all judges theres no way that could happen. There are so many rounds to get too before supreme champion is judged: Breed classes -> Best of Breed -> Best of group -> Best in Show At each of these levels there would be a seperate judge & depending on the numbers entered there may be more than 1 judge per breed class. There is no hard & fast formula for winning each class, it's ultimatley down to each judges preferences - they all have thier favourite breeds & types within the breed. When we were showing our Griffons regularly there were judges who would choose only roughs & others who would only go for smooths.
Pirate
Thanks Hardy: Never bothered with Cruft's before, or Dog's for that matter, but I shall be following the show with interest. The Judging sounds sensible for sure, but something seems to have spooked William Hill. Pirate:
darebear
There is so much money in the Showing and Breeding game, that it just sounds like the usual jealousies among some of the professionals that attend. You only have to get on the fringes of showing dogs to get exposed to the pettiness and nastiness that exists. I totally agree. Dog showing can be one of the most political and corrupt forms of sport around. And if you haven't got a backbone and the ability to tell people to shove it, I would suggest you steer clear. Dogs have been known to get poisoned - there are some bloody sick individuals around. Why do I bother with it? because you DO get some fair judges, and even if you don't win under them, at least you feel you were given a fair crack of the whip, instead of not being placed because your face doesn't fit. Plus I have many friends in the breed, and there are enough genuinely nice people to make it all worth while. And why wouldnt anyone wanna be in amongst all those fantastic dogs? Personally, I reckon the giant schnauzer who won the working group may get Best In Show. That's the rumour that has been flying around for a while, before it even won the group. We'll find out soon enough. Unfortunately didn't win anything this year, but hey ho, that's how it goes. You win some, you lose some, and there is always next year. I know I'll never get to the top because I'm not prepared to brown-nose and lick ****, and play dirty little games by giving certain people wins when I judge, in order to have my own back scratched and the favour repayed. But I don't care. I love judging, and judging fairly is the only way I operate. And when you show, you quickly learn which judges are not worth entering under because of their politics. Personally I refuse to support crooked judges.
russuk
I don't like crufts. The HPR's are always getting overlooked for the top spots. Sue Pinkerton had an amazing duel champion (field and show) GWP on friday and it barely got a glance. I know the English Pointer got fourth in group, but it did that little run thing they do, when they flounce about, awfully. And, what in damnation is that heelwork to music about Edited March 9, 2008 by russuk

The KC already offer DNA profiling but not many people are responsible enough to do it. If the KC were more responsible themselves they would refuse to accept registrations of litters when the parents had not had the appropriate health checks but that would cost them money so hell will freeze over first
