Near miss with a falling pheasant!!!

Recommended Posts

I heard of a very tragic true story about falling pheasants, a well off guy from Switzerland was over here on a driven day, his pregnant wife was sat on a dry stone wall behind the line of guns watching the shoot.

She was hit by a falling dead bird that knocked her backwards over the wall. She ended up with a broken spine, paralyzed from the neck down, and she also lost the baby.

What rotten luck?

Never actually been hit by a falling bird although come close a couple of times when shooting driven birds well in front, and had to move to one side. MC told me of a story of when he shot a duck out on the marsh and knew it was going to fall close to a friend of his when he heard the "oof" sound of somebody getting hit and the voice saying "Don't worry I picked that one for you" as it hit him in the back :good::lol:

Also heard of a bloke on a local shoot who on the last drive and decided he'd had enough shooting so put his gun away to watch. Guy on the next peg shot at and hiot a crossing partridge. First guy decided to catch it as it fell towards him and promptly broke his hand in doing so.

Lets face it 1-3lb of Meat, feather and bone hurtling over 30-40mph down at you is not going to be soft now is it.

you want to try shooting geese at dusk in patchy fog  Now that is frightening. I caught a glimpse of a skein through the fog and let rip, knowing i had hit clean but loosing sight of the falling bird i instantly covered my head and made small as i knew this one was going to be close. The bird hit the floor with such a thump two feet to my right. Had the fog not been there i would have just sidestepped out the way but as luck would have it it missed me :good: I was certainly worried for a few seconds i can tell you :)

Was picking up on a shoot near Pewsey earlier last season on a pretty busy partridge day. One of the guns dropped a high, fast crosser which landed on the neighbouring gun. Hit him square in the face and knocked him clean off his feet. His face was a bit of a mess too, as he was wearing classes which cut his cheek pretty badly. Ouch!

Me and Magman(rob) where flighting geese and as a low sceem came in we both shot and as i went on to my next bird i heared rob shout, i turned to see rob on the floor in pain with a big canada on him.

He had shot his first bird and as he moved on to his next bird the first came down and hit him.:yes:

You should of seen his thumb it was a nice shade of BLACK as he had hurt it on the trigger guard.
